I've been unlucky in this. But me and my friend found a nice two bed apartment which we've just moved into. Only problem is we've been charged fees (last week) which will soon be banned. Now we both okay'd the fees but now looking at the contract there is renewal fees and check out fees. Now considering this would be in a years time (after the tenancy fees have been banned) will we actually have to pay them or will it then be illegal?

The contract terms at the date of signing will prevail so yes you will have to pay the exit fees. Estate agents will still find a way to charge people the money but calling it something else. Dont get nothing for nothing. Landlords pay 50% of the first months rent to them as well so they cash in both ways.

IF tenancy fees get banned / capped or restricted than the fees are just going to be transferred to the landlord whom in turn will raise the rent to cover it so either way the tenant will pay, just it will be in more expensive rent for a longer period.

When it comes to renew the tenancy unless you want the security of a new term then either refuse the renewal and go on to a periodic rolling contract or pay, likely the money grabbing agent will issue all kinds of threats if you tell them but if you stall long enough then the process is automatic.
Lots of help and advice on a certain money saving website.
There has been no reports of rent prices going up in Scotland who have outlawed any type of fee for a few years now but it will be interesting if our government follows the same way or somehow bows to their corporate masters again.
