I've heard bad things about Navman.

Garmin and TomTom are the supposed to be the best, in that order.

nope, if you do a search you will find that most of us on here have got navmans and are well happy esp the F20

Well that's a subjective thing isn't it, I was just stating I'd been told (by a friend, who fits car electronics for a living) both Garmin and TomTom beat the pants off them.

But there is quite a price difference, obviously you have 1st hand experience of the Navman F20 so I'm sure you're right and it's very good for the money.

Whether or not the the Garmin and TomTom's are worth the extra is again subjective, to many, like you, it's not. To many it is, particularly those who live in Ireland and suffer very poor coverage from the Navman's. Also those that don't appreciate the outdated POI database, the relatively slow re-routing, the relatively low volume on the voice navigation and the lack of an option to avoid particular routes/roads and lack of detail on the maps.

A quick Google search should confirm all that and more. But again they're all just opinions of reviewers and users so again it's all subjective. They're not particularly crippling issues but in my opinion there's enough to warrant the extra money .

I don't really have much experience with Garmin, but tomtom products are hard to beat. Admittedly I don’t see the worth in some of their “high end” features like extra storage space to store MP3s, but use any of the other brands and you’ll notice the quality in speed and receiver strength.

Saying that because tomtom hold so much of the UK market, competitors are forced to include a lot more features in their lower priced units.

Keep your eye on the F20 it seems to be a favourite amongst the price competitors and is likely to come down even more over the months ahead
