Hi, im looking for a sat nav with speech recognition. I don't mind what make it is as long as it's cheap and good. Also lets say i know where to get the tomtom software, can i install the tomtom software onto a non-tomtom sat nav and the voice recognition aspect of it to still work?

Speech recognition (and for that matter, text-to-speech) doesn't tend to be a feature of cheap or cheaper sat navs.

It tends to come part way or torwards the upper-end of the price range - with TomTom I think it's the 520 and 530 that have speech recognition, Garmin and I think probably somewhere in the Nuvi 8xx range.

Don't think you'll have much joy with the PDA versions, yet.

Sat Navs with Voice Recog is the top end Sat Navs and cost upwards of £400.

Check out this article regarding the TomTom with VR http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/news/index.cfm?newsid=10579

With regards to getting one with VR and then installing TomTom on to it. Unless you're in the know-how about programming SatNav software then its going to be (a) A Non-Starter and (B) a waste of money. The SatNav Software and VR work interactively and are customised to work that way.

If you're fixed on wanting a TomTom with VR then check out their website for the latest models to give you a better insight to what they can offer. Cheers.

the porter
watch the gadget show from last night on the 5 player they didnt think the voice recognition was much cop

Well I've used it on a couple of sat navs, now. And personally, I could live without it - but I know some people who think it's truly excellent.

I found it sometimes awkward, whilst in a car, due to the acoustics, but when working well, and having to do things whilst on the move, it could be a boon.

For my own uses, though, I'm rather ambivalent to it.

Your link to the 520 above was fine - that has voice recognition.

I doubt that version has europe maps, though.

TT One doesn't have voice recognition, I was referring to a previous link (in this thread) to this

I don't see anybody saying that the TT One does have vr in this thread. You were the one bringing up the TT One, I talked about the 520, and somebody else linked to a 930, I was just saying that it doesn't need the expense of the 930 - or even the x30 series, 'cos vr is a feature of the 520.
