Should I buy a PS2 and What games

Hi,
I'm pondering whether I should buy a PS2 games console (not PS3)?

I know nothing about games consoles but I'm looking for one that I can buy good games at a low price. I like sniper/war games and good two player games.
What games do yoy recommend for the PS2 at a low price?

Thanks very much

PS2 is a good ole boy that has an extensive back catalogue. Also if you end buying a load of PS2 games and then upgrade in the future to PS3 you wqill still be able to play the games!
(Well most of them - you need to check their compatability first - but I've had no problems).

get some of the socom games if you fancy war games.
you can go online with them too and have massive multiplayer wars.
socom on the PS3 soon hopefully.

Thanks Shima, you've twisted my arm.
I'm thinking of getting one from play. I take it I will need a memory card? Where can I buy a cheap one and an extra controller?

lanoddan, can you play online with the PS2?
#5
yeah just stick an ethenet cable in the back and sign up,

all free and far more fun and addictive than single player games.
socom was awsome online.

Brillaint. I've just bought one from play. Where can I get a cheap memory card. By the way what are the memory cards needed for (I told you I haven't got a clue)

This is not quite true.

The 60Gb PS3 that is on sale in the UK now DOES offer support for PS2 games. When current stock of the 60Gb PS3 have been sold no more will be made.

The latest PS3 (Oct 2007) is the 40Gb model and this DOES NOT offer suport for PS2 games. You cannot play PS2 games on the 40Gb model.

I have heard talk of a new model next year, but there are rumours that this wll not offer support for PS2 games.

It is felt Sony want to discourage support for PS2 games and to encourage more games to be writen (and sold) for the PS3

See here for chart of which PS2 models support PS2 games.

You need the memory cards to save your games. Simple as that.
The Playstation 2 does not have onboard memory that can be used to save user data.

These are essential for PS2 owners

Price wise - aim for under a tenner for an 8mb one

Be careful about the compatablilty assumption. The new 40Gb PS3 does not run PS2 games.

So guess the solution is to buy a 60Gb version (expensive upgrade i know), I must admit I didn't realize the 40gb version didn't have the emulator in it.
LOLZ that is soooo lame.

You need to be quick.

The 60Gb is selling out fast and many stores have not got them. I doubt there will be many around after Xmas.

I believe PC World still have some.

The price is £349 for the 60Gb but most places throw in 2 games for that.

I managed to buy the slim PS2 from play for £65. Now I need some good game recommendations

Best War/Shooter games for PS2:

Sniper Elite (Multiplayer) Awesome game, everytime you play this it's different, AI is spot on (and sneaky). Hard to find SH, buy new for guaranteed condition. (Online) Not tried the online and don't know if it's still available.

Black (1 Player) Just awesome, no more needs to be said, just buy it.

Desert Storm (Multiplayer) Up to 4th game in series, all excellent single and multiplayer, as the series progressed the graphics and AI got better. Global Storm (4th) is online and it's servers are still up and running (I was on there Weds night) and you play co-op (up to 4 players) the same missions as the off line game.

Socom (Some multiplayer, some not) Excellent games, but online requires others to be online otherwise your on your own (boring) and you do require to be registered with Sony for Socom which is a pain. Combined Assault is the only version where you can play co-op full missions.

Killzone Hehe, description says it all, shoot feast, yum.

Well bringing out a white version (Ceramic) in Japan and USA (Singstar package) and it's supposed to be headed here in Jan and there's still 160 games waiting to be released before March 2008 isn't the way to discourage it.

Oh and don't forget:

Splinter Cell
Ghost Recon
Rainbow Six

Deus Ex is an awesome game (once used to controllers).

Most are available cheap SH from Gamestation (I always ask to check disc and buy when it's not busy and if there's any scratches on the disc the guy always runs it through the cleaning machine ; )

Going online (apart from Socom) couldn't be easier, just plug in network cable and all settings are automatic (in each game), you will need some different email addresses available if the servers are run by GameSpy for different accounts, but everything else is simple.

PM me if you need any more help or ask here.

god of war 1 and 2 are very very god.
shadow of the collosus is probably one of the best looking games on the PS2. worth looking at.
at grand theft Auto's will keep you busy for a long time.
metal gear solid
need for speed - most wanted (non of the others are as good)
burnout
manhunt and manhunt 2 when and if it gets released.
final fantasy
loads of classics.

get yourself down to blockbusters or gamestation nad have rummage through the second had games.

I wouldn't want to play manhunt, it's a good game but so cruel and nasty.

I'm not feeling too great today though after watching Schindler's list at school.

Aye, I'm playing Black now - Got the original version for £3.60 on fleabay. Excellent gameplay and quite challenging. It has to be the best FPS on the PS2 since the PS2 lacks many good ones.
#20
The comments are mucg appreciated. Any pointers where to pick these games up at good prices would also be excellent.
#21
Most (apart from newer releases and hard to get ones) should be available in Gamestation, usually under the 4 for £20.

Manhunt 2 maybe here before Xmas, so I was told ! but cutting it fine.

Agreed, 'Black' is one of the best shooters for the PS2 without doubt.

Thanks very much for your advice

Forgot to mention, as you may be wanting to play Multiplayer, try and see if Comet have any of these near you.

Good price for official products, (Controller & Memory Card) if you can find one with stock local to you. (Just reserved one for myself)
