Should I go for TalkTalk broadband ?

Hi folks !

I am tempted to go for the TalkTalk broadband offer which includes Free national and international calls. But I'm hearing unconfirmed stories about their appalling customer service and indefinite queuing on 0870 numbers, apart from the long waiting list.

Any suggestions?

Avoid! I had them , terrible customer service. Taking money out of my account for no particular reason, even long after I had cancelled my deal with them. Long waits for their customer service helplines. Truly awful.

I'd give them a miss if I were you - at least, I'm not going to touch them.

Give it a few months and see how the market pans out - Orange are also giving free BB on certain phone contracts.

Forums - A TalkTalk word of warning... - PC Advisor
"I see that TalkTalk has recommenced advertising its "free" broadband offer in national newspapers, so here's a word of warning if you are thinking of making the change.

It all boils down to the fact that if your current ISP is only able to provide a Data Stream MAC, rather than IP, to enable you to switch to TalkTalk, then you could be without broadband for a month or more.

TalkTalk is unable to use BBDS MACs so, in order to swap ISPs, you will have to cancel your current ISP's service and then ask TalkTalk to take it on.

It takes around 15 days for the current ISP's markers to be removed and then a further 10 days (or even a lot longer in TalkTalk's case) to connect you - that means being without broadband for some while.

For obvious reasons Carphone Warehouse doesn't make this point known when you sign up (at least in my case), so it's worth thinking about if you are thinking of taking advantage of its service."

The above thread is worth a look too.

i've been with talktalk broadband for over a year now and i've been pleasantly surprised!
reliable fast connection.

i'm about to switch to their new free 8mb broadband.
£19.99 a month for unlimited landline calls to 24 countries worldwide and 8mb broadband is a good deal!

thanks arpeggi :)

I havent got the slightest doubt that TalkTalk deal is value for money. I want to know how things went when people switched to TalkTalk. From Diodo's response, it wont be surprising if I am left without a connection for days if not months..

well mine was switched within the day. no problems so far.
i'll keep you update when the faster router arrives.

the only minor snag is that i won't get 8mb broadband until august - 2mb until then. i guess it just depends on your area.

id hardly call it value for money guys, im assuming you have all checked the 16 pages of terms and conditions??

Build in the crap customer service, rip of charges anytime you want to ring them to get crap service , the waiting list (mr dunstone waits before he upgrades exchanges until he has enough customers on his waiting list to ensure it doesnt cost him investment cash for not enough return)

Most sensible people would say you get nothing for nothing these days the costs are built in somewhere :-)

If all is up and running smoothly, TalkTalk is value of money (IMHO).

Free International Calls + Free UK Calls + Free broadband for around £9 (excluding BT equivalent rental charges) is a good offer esp when no one matches it.

I agree with you jase :) Dont want to end up waiting for Mr Dunstone to gather enough customers in my local exchange to reap the full benefits. :D

Ive been with talk talk for over a year with absolutely no probs just signed up for the free broadband offer over £150 saving a year is hard to ignore and so what if customer service is poor, how do the other ones rate?

Avoid. I had TT broadband and it was truly awful. They have Fair Use Policy, which is nothing more than port blocking and traffic throttling. I had even troubles with FTP (on my own website!) and VPN (to access work emails, etc). Not even to mention P2P...
Their frontline support is bunch of uneducated script reading kiddies with hardly understandable accents (don't start BNP tune, I am foreigner myself as you might have noticed :D).
However, their second line support guys are very good and knowledgeable. Their tech support isn't free, but there is a way to get money refunded - if outage was due to their system's failure, call free customers service line and tell'em that there is no way you are going to pay for service outage which was clearly their problem (but get it confirmed by second line support guys first). It worked for me.

As to MAC, when my contract was out, I phoned them and asked for MAC. I received it in five minutes but then had (roughly) a dozen letters stating that they can't issue MAC for various reasons. Luckily, by then I already gave that MAC to my current provider (Zen) and they initiated transfer.

Any point asking if you went for this edi? What's your experience been?

Hope you don't mind me dragging this up though... just interested in peoples' experience of TT.

Cheers, Dio :)

Avoid like the plague, I had numerous problems of all sorts, it took them 6 months to acknowledge that I had cancelled my account with them for breach of contract - crap service, really- they kept sending bills and it has taken a long time and a lot of frustration to get this sorted out.
I am with BT now, paying more but more than happy with the excellent technical support.

a year ago when the the talk3 international deal w/ free broadband cam out, i would say stay well away from it, but a year later they have upgraded my service to 4MBit/s and all is running smoothly for the time being, but yes customer service is a shambles and i have spent countless hours on the phone to them with problems with my service for the 1st 6 months but i have 2 say that they have improved alot since then and are well worth the money.

I'm on Onetel (taken over by the same people) and i've only had one problem in the couple of years i've been with them. Their CS department was BRILLIANT. Answered the phone within 30 seconds on the 4 occasions I had to call (had to do line tests from my end and relay the data back to them), granted it was an indian call centre. They tried to teach granma to suck eggs but as soon as I started talking technical they escalated my problem. Even had a CS rep call ME to ask if the problem was sorted a few days later.

Just thought i'd reply to this as people are always ready to complain but hardly ever praise a company when things go right:thumbsup:
