So Amazon Warehouse Deals had the following graphics card:

"GIGABYTE AMD R9 390X SOC G1 GAMING 8GB" - "Item is in original packaging, but packaging has minor damage. Small cosmetic imperfection (less than 2.5cm x 2.5cm) on front of item. All purchases eligible for Amazon customer service and a 30-day return policy."

The cost was £183.

Should I cancel this and go for a Radeon RX 480 that is brand new for perhaps £40? more. I currently only have a Radeon 5870 (It was the fastest in the world when I bought it!)

Any help appreciated as I'm not up to date with best-buys.

The RX 480 is similar in performance jn many games but uses ~100W less power (so is likely to be quieter) and has a couple of more advanced secondary features like DisplayPort 1.4 outputs and low power HEVC decoding in addition to the 390X's H.264. And of course no marks on it.

Whether that's worth an extra £40 is up to you. It was around £210-215 on launch for the cheapest RX 480 8GB so depending on how the brexit uncertainly affects discounting we may see that again in the pre-christmas price fight.

i would say it comes down to ur power supply and computer ventilation. the 390X would consume more power and therefore produce more heat. this is a no for some people i.e people with 450W PSU or below and with computer cases that have poor ventilation to remove that heat.

i would go with the 480, in the long term u would save money from ur electric bill and it would produce less heat/noise.

Any particular reason why - albeit discontinued - the 'New' price of a r9 390x has held circa £320-£360. Amazon show it as temporarily out of stock at £350 'New'. But I don't understand why it didn't go down to RX 480 prices?

I have a 1000W power supply (future proofing :p) so not too fussed on the power side of things. I'd have to double check whether my case is classed as good ventilation these days :) Heat could be annoying just in terms of making the room too hot, noise not too fussed.

Cancelled as per your guys advice :) Will hang on for a excellent deal of a higher spec card.

I'd personally get the RX 480

I would consider the geforce 1060gtx 3gb at that price point

...and if you have another 40 quid get the 6gb version of the 1060

Sorry for the multiple posts but here is the latest post for the £229 6gb 1060gtx http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/asus-geforce-gtx-1060-turbo-6gb-gddr5-229-99-bt-shop-2509802

I'm possibly going to order one to replace my 760 I have in my desktop
