Call up their customer services. 0800 0512595. Say you want to cancel. Keep saying you do till they give you the retentions department... they should give you a great offer... usually 3 months free then half price for six months and a free sky + box or something like that... They won't let ya leave so try n negotiate.

I was moving house and wanted to cancel my subscription. So just for a bit of fun I thought I would see what I could get out of them. Told them I was going to get a freeview box and that the only thing the wife watched that wasn't freeview on Sky was Most Haunted on living TV.

They passed me onto the retention department who can do the best deals. In the end they were going to give me a second box to plug in upstairs and reduce my subscription from £20 a month to £7.50. As seancampbell says you have got to keep saying that you want to "cancel" as they will try and give you as little as possible but will negotiate. Even if you push too hard you have to give 30 days notice so that still gives you/ Sky plenty of time to phone back and stop the cancellation. I've heard that they do phone to see if you will reconsider but I moved so don't know from experience.

I also had a box that packed in once. Phoned up customer services and said I want a new box. They said "Certainly sir, that will be £65 please". Told them to shove their subscription. Funnily enough her supervisor authorised a new box. Sky are desperate to keep customers so don't get fobbed off.

I've rang sky this evening, told them I wanted to cancel and move over to ntl. The guy is sending a technician out free of charge and said if its hardware they will change it over for free.

Best deal so far, is £49.99 for sky + box, and pay an additional £16 and get Sky + subscription and 2 premium channels - not that much of a deal.

However wil get it fixed 1st and then check out the retentions department

Hi i worked for sky TV the depatment is not called the retentions department,it is called TURN AROUND,Which is what they are paid to do,try and make you turn around from canceling.
They will always offer you something to keep you.
Normal 1 to say is that you have been paid off and want to cancel, thats when they offer 3 or 6 mths half price.

As long as you dont take out a new contract.
Sky plus is free if you take movies or sports.

What do you mean by 'paid off'?

It seemed odd, sounded like being paid a debt that waas owed to you. That would mean you have more money to spend.

paid off is used in scotland,as the same as laid off, sorry you didnt understand.

Well the update....

Had the engineer, didnt replace box, even though we had tested our system with another box, no probs, told me that the aerial needed adjusting!

so he did and left and guess what the box froze yet again!, hadnt even left 10 minutes, so tryed to call Sky and was told they would try and get the engineer to pop back

guess what the excuse was, i'm out of the area, if you knew my town, you cannot get anywhere in 1/2 hour, not even 5 miles let alone out of the area

so now waiting till thursday, other half none too happy as the guy told us to leave it exactly as it is, frozen (TIL THURSDAY!:x )

then the next guy wanted the guy card, so yu guessed it needed to take it out and will have to wait til it freezes again! what a job...NTL is looking a better prospect right now

Just to let you know, dont let them fob you off, like they did on tuesday to me!

Sky guy came, told me that the dish (mechanical bit) had blown, and the other engineer should have changed it, also changed the box for a refurb box
so we'll see how it goes...

I will try for a better deal providing this is now sorted
