Now its a year or two out of warranty and I would'nt mind an HD+ box but I dont want to be screwed by Sky - if they wont play ball I will just switch to Freeview through Sky - anyone got any tips for handling them? What should I be paying if anything for an HD box and how can I get around the tenner a month charge? Any advice most welcome (inc best number to phone them on as I guess it will be customer services I want to speak to??)

Thanks

Only number that works is 08702 404040 as they closed off the freephone numbers. They have offers on the HD boxes at the minute........think it's between £150-£200. Though i don't think there is anyway around the £10 a month charge at the mo.

What he said..

But if can't get a good deal on the HD box and you're on a decent package with Sky just tell them you need the Sky+ box repaired - they'll say they want to charge you £60 for an engineer call, just go to cancel and they'll waive this charge and you'll get a an engineer out with replacement box for free.

I've just upgraded to HD - after much hassling Sky a month or so ago about a discounted HD box, there was nothing doing so I bought a brand new sealed one off eBay with 12 months warranty for £175 - this thread on DigitalSpy shows you how to do a DIY install, then just call Sky and ask them to activate the new box and start charging you an extra £10 a month

try ebay, there are loads of boxes on there!
also, i managed (thanx to this site) to get a free sky + box last month for upstairs, its amazing what you can get if you say you are thinking of leaving them for another provider (esp virgin)!!!

also ,DONT JUMP AT THE 1ST OFFER!!!! play it cool, push for more, they make you haggle but believe me its sooo worth it!!

you would get a new sky + box for free by just ringing up and asking to cancel, when they ask why tell them your box is broke and you arenot prepaid to pay for engineer. they wil give you a free call out and he wil replace your box free.

Thansk everyone - this strategy worked! I'l wait till they stop charging a tenner for HD I think.

BTW I just took the hard drive out of the bust one as its got a few things I want to watch on it (I dont think its kaput as I could hear it spinning up) - hopefully I can put it in the new box or is there any way to read the info if I installed it in a PC?

In short..........no. Sky encrypts all the info stored on the hard drive so the PC won't read it. You can however format the drive and keep it as a spare for the PC.
