i will stand to be corrected, but I think they have to alter something (a new lnb???) on your sky dish as well as just giving you a new box (unlike the upgrade path from Sky to Sky+)

Wrong, Sky HD uses the same dish/LNB as Sky +.

A new LNB is required to go from Sky standard to Sky + or HD.

I am led to believe that if you have Sky+ already, you only need the new box and subscription, and the best place to get cheap(er) boxes from at the moment is Fleabay!

Already mentioned that.

A regular online auction, get a quad ( 4 outputs ) you will only use 2 of them.

Easy to fit with a bit of common sense, you will need an additional cable as well.

Satellite Cable, to go from the LNB to the Sky + Receiver.

Take a look at the Satellite Section of DigitalSpy Forum for anything you are not sure of.;-)

Why? I presume you mean unless you subscribe to Sky HD?

how much does it cost to sub scribe to sky HD. do you have to pay per channel or do you get every channel for a monthly/ one of fee

£10 a month for all HD Channels, but TBH you can count them on one hand hence me waiting a little longer for more HD Channels to launch.
