Sky or Virgin Tivo

callum84 Avatar
2y, 2m agoPosted 2 years, 2 months ago
I currently have standalone 100mb fibre with my local cable company and half price Sky world ending this month.

The cable company has been bought out by Virgin Media meaning customers are being migrated onto Virgin packages.

The broadband is a no brainer and will be taking with Virgin but just need to decide whether it's standalone or move my TV over to them as well.

Interested to hear anyone's view who has had both Sky & Virgin Tivo.

I have broadband via Virgin and TV via Sky. Your best bet is to speak to someone at Sky and tell them you can go to Virgin but like the Sky offering. I too was on a half price deal with Sky, but rang up and got same package but 25% discount for 12 months and no tie in which I was happy with. I also had sky broadband and phone but cancelled that lot as don't need a phone line now with Virgin as I use Sipgate instead (VOIP) service so don't pay line rental.

Sky everytime! We moved this year as had enough of yet another price rise, and crap service for a lot of money!
I know sky are expensive but personally I think we get what we pay for. We were worried about the broadband, but apart from the one incident which affected the whole region, it has been better than virgin. Virgin may claim super fast speeds, but we for one certainly weren't getting them! It seemed to slow down as the evening went on, and if my family dared try using the internet at the same time it would pretty much be useless!
Good luck!

I'm hoping my Internet will stay the same with Virgin takeover. I get the full 100mbit most of the day but sometimes drops to 80 at peak times.
The current cable company operates slightly different to Virgin and has much less homes per cabinet/fibre node so hopefully congestion won't be an issue.

Swaying towards keeping TV with sky.

Unless sky has a particular channel you can't live without I say go with Virgin Media. Tivo is far better than the Sky boxes, Weather never effects the TV service and it is cheaper. I have been with Virgin for 12 years and can only remember 1 outage a couple years ago. BB is super fast and almost always at the maximum speed.

They also keep hiking the speed and number of channels and Virgin are still cheaper than Sky. I have only gotten foreign customer service if I called out of hours, otherwise usually Scotish (Unless you call that foreign X) )

you obviously work for virgin! I was with virgin/ ntl for 11years, when virgin acquired ntl that's when the problems started! I had TiVo and what a load of cr*p in two year they were out over 20 times they couldn't find the fault, the final straw was there inflation busting price hikes in February! Fortunately sky knock on my door and offered me a 12 month contract, all tv, 45mbps fibre broadband and phone unlimited including line rental, the put an open reach phone line to the house all for £27 pm. Virgin for a similar package with my long loyalty discount wanted over £100. It was a no brainier. I was the first on my estate to get sky since then I estimate 90% have swapped to sky. Virgin are losing customers hand over fist and with the way they keep inflating there price will soon be doomed!

Why is that the go to answer when someone likes a company? No I dont work for Virgin.

I pay £76/month for 152mb BB, XLTV with a 1G Tivo box and Second HD Box and Talk Unlimited Extra plus Talk 1000 which gives me 1000 minutes/month to call anywhere in the world for free.

Maybe, but it is a deal that isn't even available from Sky at any price and how about showing us your 45mbps Speedtest.net result

Here's mine on a friday evening at 6pm which is peak time.

if you tell me how to share it, I will. It is alright having over 100mbps but what real practical use is it, if the site your visiting are not hosting on the same speed or has a lot of traffic?

I've used Sky and now have Virgin. For what I get Sky can't match and (I guess it must be where I live) haven't had any major problems since being with them. Sky do tend to offer better deals but once you start adding in extra channels and Sky Go etc etc it's no cheaper for me to switch plus I'm currently on the top tier speed of 152mb, again at the moment neither Sky or BT can get anywhere near that. It's a shame because my area could do with more providers!

You can stream very well off of 2 mbps, so at 20mbps that should quite happily satisfy any household, so you want a faster speed to download torrents, of which 99.5% are illegal. If you were a small internet based business I could understand your need for these speeds, but for the majority of standard people this speed is nothing more than a gimmick. One other thing if the seed who your downloading from, doesn't have super quick broad band then your argument is floored then!

Virgin: Sky charge for engineer visits and to replace equipment. Virgins network is way better than sky. Murdoch family are unpleasant characters. The Branson family are pleasant in comparison. People moaning about not getting the advertised speed probably have poorly setup internal networks and equipment. Had sky+ and 2 boxes broke and sky wanted 60 quid just to call and visit lol. Never had any trouble with Tivo and box upgrade from V+ was free.

Yea try streaming full HD on a 2Mb connection and tell me how that goes, To reliably stream a Full HD movie requires a minimum of 15Mb and that's when everything is working well and only one person is streaming at a time.

i would quite happily share my results however it won't let me, maybe because I am on my ipad. Currently I've got 35mbps download and 10.2mbps upload, not really ars*d if you believe me, but when I was with virgin I was on the 60mbps package and was lucky to get 35mbps, and the service was always going down, best thing I ever did leaving and moving to sky. Personally my internet speed is more than sufficient for our household needs and I'm not paying thru the nose as some for a service they don't need!

I've had fibre for the last 8 years, I'm not looking for faster broadband.
Yeah some torrents won't max your connection but if your downloading many it will. I regularly see 8MB/s on a single torrent with decent seeds.
I'll ignore the comment about legality.
I have around 20 devices on my network, usually stream HD in multiple rooms, nas which syncs to remote server every 4 hours, IP cam uploading HD alerts to remote Ftp.
Trust me, it's not a gimmick.

Sky all the way, virgin keep hiking up there prices and have very poor foreign customer service.

I pay £76/month for 152mb BB, XLTV with a 1G Tivo box and Second HD Box and Talk Unlimited Extra plus Talk 1000 which gives me 1000 minutes/month to call anywhere in the world for free.
wow your being well ripped off!!

Torrents or streaming on multiple devices.
I've had fibre for the last 8 years, I'm not looking for faster broadband.
Yeah some torrents won't max your connection but if your downloading many it will. I regularly see 8MB on a single torrent with decent seeds.
I'll ignore the comment about legality.
I have around 20 devices on my network, usually stream HD in multiple rooms, nas which syncs to remote server every 4 hours, IP cam uploading HD alerts to remote Ftp.
Trust me, it's not a gimmick.
why are you ignoring my comment on legality?
Because it's irrelevant.
My question was for advice on Sky TV or Tivo.

It's more of a crime morally the prices that the movie / tv companies charge tbh :)

Thanks for chipping in.
I'd be happy enough with 25% off for 12 months, will give them a call when discount expires and see what they say.
Have no need for land line either, currently on a broadband only deal with no line rental so will probably take same with Virgin.

No probs. Defo worth giving them a call. You can probably get better discounts by actually canceling and waiting for the sales call, but I didn't want to risk it so when the retentions dept offered 25% discount without prompting just took it. Was then told to ring again in another 12 months for another discounted period ☺.

25% off Sky TV is rubbish, you should be aiming for a lot higher discount - at least 50% off at the minimum.

Never had any trouble with Tivo and box upgrade from V+ was free.

off wifi :)

How far away were you from your Super Hub when you did that SpeedTest?

And what Super Hub are you using (version 1 or 2)?

And what BB package are you on? :)

Superhub 1, in modem mode, with an asus rt-n66u router, on 2.4ghz 40 mhz channel 11 lower, Asus USB-N66 receiver. Windoze XP. TCP optimiser set to optimal , about 20 feet away from router, upstairs through ceiling and wall. On Virgin 100mb (supercharged 60mb)

We've got Virgin for both. The Broadband is much superior. I've gone for the smallest package which is 30Mb and if I do a speed test at anytime of the day it will be at least 29mbit. If I queue a few well seeded torrents then they will max the connection out for the whole time. It's been very good for the 7 years that I've had it, my first BB issue was this week just gone and seemed to be a DNS issue affecting a lot of people. Was resolved shortly after.

Tivo is great for the TV and you can record more channels that the Sky box can, it has all the TV channels I want and is cheaper than Sky. I have family with Sky who always comment on how they wish they had cable in the area so they could switch to virgin to get Tivo.

Personally if I were you I'd phone Virgin and say that you're with Sky at the moment for the TV and ask what deal they will do to persuade you to move.

Oh - one other advantage of Virgin - They own the equipment - if the Tivo box dies they pop round and put you another one in free of charge. If you lose the remote they pop another one in the post for you etc.

That's extremely impressive speeds over Wi-Fi, especially considering it goes through a ceiling and wall.

The asus series of routers are nicknamed "concrete crushers" for that reason.

Basically Merlin takes the stock firmware and applies a lot of bug fixes etc His aim is to remain as close to the stock firmware as possible not replace it. Improving stability primarily. I think Asus may of now added this but little tweaks such as being able to name each static DHCP device. The new asus firmware has just been released so any day now the latest merlin will provide an enhanced version.

Although it is recommended to factory reset before a firmware update, I never have and it remembers all my settings and simply over installs over the stock.

Hope that helps.

Certainly does, looks awesome.
I've had custom firmware on most of my routers but have never found a need with this one apart from perhaps the VPN client.
Will give this a try tomorrow. Cheers.

Virgin has a MUCH better service. Except the tivo box is sluggish compares to a skybox. Having had both i prefered sky for tv (there box is much faster than tivo) but Virgin Broadband? in a league of its own!

I usually stick with the routers the ISP gives, as I think it's too confusing/complicated and long to set-up your own one, but maybe in the future I'll consider it. Thanks anyway Musician. :)

Maybe next time, but I'd just cancelled broadband and phone with them so didn't want to push my luck (_;).
