Hi HUKD'rs

Can anyone recommend a smartphone for my mum to use? She is 54, doesn't have any sort of social media or even an email address (she's quite old-fashioned). The phone will have to be pay-as-you-go (ideally on Virgin, but if she has to change her SIM/number then that's ok), touchscreen with a decent enough camera and with a budget of £60. Oh, and maybe the best place to buy from?

Any help will be greatly appreciated...
Cheers.

Ios is the easiest operating system to use. You coukd probably get an iphone 4s or 5c for just a bit more than your budget

If she gets on with it can always upgrade at a later point to a better spec phone.

Get her an iPhone. It's extremely basic and easy to use so she'll be fine with it.

A person from the age of 50 and up is considered old. But in terms of years, still young because it's only halfway.

If she won't be using loads of apps then something with even 1gb of ram would do such as the smart speed or the moto e 2nd edition. Although what you'll find is they will scrimp on camera.
So you may, if camera is important, have to step up. Things like the galaxy As or moto Gs (2bd or 3rd edition would be fine)
The lost important thing is launcher if you go with Android.
I got my 65 year old mum an alcatel pop something. Basically Android 4.4, 1gb ram. But I stuck on it a launcher called wiser. Go to the play store and they'll be loads if you search for big launcher. Wiser restricts the launcher down to the core phone features. Phone, contacts, texts messages etc with only a small bit of customisation.
Makes it super easy to use.
Hope that helps.

I know, that's only 9 years away for me.

No point wasting £700 on a "Jesus phone", she won't use many of it's features.

A budget Lumia will offer similar performance and are relatively straight forward to use.

The world. I'm sorry I hurt your feelings.. nope, I'm not.

The o2 refresh iPhone deal on a 5S is probably a good start and disable updates for it to avoid the bog down. They unlike other phones have next to 0 learning curve.

The world? :DX) perhaps your strange little world Spasho, not anyone else's. You didn't hurt my feelings. It's just when someone makes a categoric statement of so-called fact, I like to know the source for future reference. But, you don't have a source. No surprise there.

It's just the daft things that young people say sometimes.

Installing Wiser now, Thx :)

I tutor ppl on compters/internet/phones and Wiser looks like it could help a lot of my clients!

If she wants to stay with Virgin, she could take one of their 2 year contracts including a simple phone for under £10/month.
As for 54 being old, 50 is the new 40. :)
