Try your local phone repair shops, they may have some.

yes, you're right to be concerned.
dodgy chargers are a real safety risk.
i wouldn't trust a phone shop - what's to stop them selling a cheap poundshop knock off for £12 and claiming it's a top notch product?

I have many from old phones etc but the one I did buy (for portability more than anything) was the thincharger. I was satisfied that it was built with safety in mind and it has been fine. It can be bought on eBay for almost a tenner http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ThinCharger-2100ma-/330748851883
Another company has made a similar one for cheaper http://www.amazon.co.uk/Decrescent-Adaptor-iPhone-Manufacturer-Warranty-Black/dp/B00E5IGR32/
i'm also a fan of the masterplug solutions for plugging in lots of things into one socket
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Masterplug-SRPTU82PB-Charging-Protected-Extension/dp/B006HFMEMO
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Masterplug-SRGDU62PB-Charging-Protected-Extension/dp/B006HFME4M
they both have 2 usb charging ports. they're also very safe compared to some adaptors out there, but they aren't at their lowest price here

my personal go-to charger is this one because it is safe, compact, and offers 5 ports
there are many deals/codes for this knocking £4 off (just search the deals!) however not sure if any codes are currently valid

If you wait until you can get a good deal on the anker or any of the others, I would suggest not buying a stop-gap charger but charging through laptop/playstation etc until then.
i can't stress enough how bad the dodgy chargers can be. i'm sure you must be aware (i missed fake britain but someone talked about it the other day).

Buy off amazon.

If it's an Android smartphone, or Windows, it should use a micro-USB port to charge. These are supposed to be the best you can buy: http://www.amazon.co.uk/BlackBerry-Portable-PlayBook-International-Charger/dp/B004XKG7NM/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1417972865&sr=8-4&keywords=blackberry+charger

Different phones have different charging requirements varying between 0.5 Amp and 2.1 Amp. Check that your charger has enough power, or buy a 5 port 40 Amp charger which will charge five of the most demanding phones at once.

That chargers terrible, will take ages to charge the devices. Better off with playbook chargers or a decent multiport charger.

I agree - I was looking at these the other day - the problem is it only supports 2Amps of output - if you plug in multiple devices, it splits it between them, it may not even charge a phone and a tablet at the same time for example - If you want something like this, check out the Anker chargers on amazon - more expensive, but generally good reviews....
