does anyone know where I can get this software for free?

something similar to the VSO convertxtoDVD program would be awesome.

If you have Nero vision it will do it, if not there are others

WinAvi 7.7 or above available from torrents or Usenet

Avi2DVD free but can be difficult to use, see the guide I have linked to.

SVCD2DVD is paid for one I use, it was on offer at £1 but I don't know if it still is.

IMO there is nothing comparable to VSO Convert X to DVD, certainly not in the 'freeware' market.

I would recommend plumping for the old free 0.5 version of VSO (called Divx to DVD back then). Even though not as good as the pay for version we have today it's still better than most.

these work well, but they are pretty slow huh.
I think what I will do is buy a dvd player that plays divx - that will save me the time, and works.

get yourself a modded original xbox, plays anything you throw at it then, added bonus of a games console, and you can even stream it direct from your pc(either via ethernet or wireless) instead of burning to disc.
