In writing, by recorded delivery. Never know what the next guys going to do with it. If he didn't register it you get all the grief regarding parking violations, speeding, RFL, insurance, accidents etc. You have to prove it want your responsibility.
Fill in slip. Photograph it and envelope - email to self as proof of date. Send to DVLA by recorded delivery. You can always do it online as well, nothing to stop you, but personally I don't trust DVLA to not cock it up somewhere.

I once part exchanged a Toyota Land cruiser at a Mercedes main dealer, they said they would sort all the documents out themselves I just signed the logbook (silly mistake I know!) three weeks later I had a letter from Yorkshire constabulary informing me I had been reported for speeding and dangerous driving around some Yorkshire town (cannot remember which town), it took weeks of phone calls letters and emails to sort out, I live in Devon and at one point the police wanted me to attend an interview in Yorkshire!

There, corrected that for you.

TBF, the UK government is no worse than many others, the Chinese Embassy in London will ONLY work correctly if you use IE7,8 or 9, and select "Chinese" as the language.

I done it online and worked very well. instant email to confirm i was no longer the owner. silly thing is that its only functional certain times of day. possibly thats why you get the error

Strange but it was only available for me from 8am to 7pm, got an onscreen message
Waited a couple of days did it within those times worked perfectly

It only works in normal working hours, so service will be down right now. Try tomorrow morning.

I sold a car last week, used the online notification later the same day, and received written confirmation of the transfer of ownership two days later.
