I was debating these two myself . After reading and watching many reviews I think the S8 is a big belly flop, its totally overrated and over priced. The only thing thats putting me off the XZ is that I already have a Z3 which I think is great except the camera is absolute pants and I want my next phone to have a great camera so I am not sure the XZ will be ideal for me either.

The Z3 does have a good camera but you have to go into the settings to change it for the particular scene you are trying to take, which is a bit of a faff when you want a quick shot.
I must admit using it on "Superior Auto" doesn't have as good results as the Samsung when it's on "Auto".

I was also debating this. I ended up with s8 as my old phone just won't last till launch of xz . Hopefully the right choice!
#4
I'd get the s8 because my z3 has been nothing but trouble and sony are more than pathetic with their support
#5
S8+ all the way.

That screen is amazing, and it feels great in the hand.

Sony haven't changed much since the first Xperia Z.
#6
All I would say is sony are absolutely USELESS if you require any support. They truly are terrible! But also (though doesn't really apply here) but whenever they release a phone the official accessories comes about 6 months later? They just not great in the mobile market...HOWEVER I loved my z3 compact phone more than current s7 edge (which is still a solid phone) so if phone doesnt breal then go with sony...but it will so go samsung.
#7
I wouldn't buy either, get a Lenovo P2 just for the great battery and use it to wait for a flagship that's actually a good phone.
#8
I have the Sony xz and I love it, have had Sony past 3 years keep thinking ill try something else and never do, my partner has the Samsung I've tried it but still prefer the sony

I couldnt disagree more. Ive tried all settings and its just rubbish, my mrs cheap Huawei takes better pics.

i have the same, dual though

price wise, I don't know.
it seems that Samsung is quite overpriced though

But it's Android. It can't be over priced or a belly flop. I'm going from iPhone to S8 and I am expecting to just praise every single android device, thought that was how it worked round here?

Youve obviously been hanging in that other forum too long.:p

The XZ Premium has 960FPS mode for 5 seconds, that's sold it to me :)

I still think Samsung are following Microsoft and doing one bad release then a good one then a duff one etc.

S6 = Vista
S7 = Windows 7
S8 = Windows 8.cack

That's my original analogy of how Samsung do things.

The S8 is Kill Bill, a triumph of style over substance. I think of the S8 as being an S7.1 where the .1 introduced some nasty bugs.

You have a lot of faith in Sony then.

I've bought every Sony since the Z1 in the belief that *this time* they'll get it right. Every time I've found the camera a let down, on top of other design, performance and build quality issues.

If you believe that that Samsung do one good release then a duff one (tick tock?) then Sony must be on a tock tock tock cycle as they are yet to release a single truly decent phone.

The best one I've had so far has been the Z3 Compact but even that had a rubbish camera and pretty poor loudspeakers given that they're stereo.

The value of Sony phones also drops faster than any other premium manufacturers I've seen, so if you buy the next Sony and try it for two months before deciding it isn't for you, then expect to get a very small amount of money back. At least the 'rip off' Samsungs hold their value a bit better.

You worked that out that from my slightly sarcastic first sentence did you? Well done :)
Anyway here's the reality, I've never owned a Sony phone and I don't know that I ever will. The S8 is a great looking phone but it's the design that is the real upgrade this year. Yes the SOC is faster, but it is every year, they've gone backwards with the fingerprint placement, I use the fingerprint a lot and it's in a hopeless place now, and as I said Samsung know this or they wouldn't start with the clean your lens warning crap.

Samsung had a chance to not only get over their Note 7 woes but also implement 4K VR. The biggest disappointment is 4K VR, come on Samsung, I was expecting this where the hell is it? Phones have the potential to lead in VR in terms of resolution. 8K is where VR needs to be. We know Samsung has phone LCD tech prototypes with higher resolutions than 8K.

The Sony XZ Premium has a 4K IPS screen and zero VR platform, whoops, no point in that 4K without a way to utilise it properly. The 960fps for 5 seconds that I almost seem dismissive about but you mistook it as Sony fanboyism, well I think Sony are actually forward thinking here, check out the videos it works surprisingly well. The camera only records for 5 seconds as the camera needs super fast storage integrated in it. Sony have done something unique here.

The Koreans and Japanese are playing it too safe. China is coming for you guys, Huawei P10/Plus and LG G6 (Korean I know) have dual camera systems, so does the iPhone 7 Plus, where's that on the S8, where's the camera upgrade, software tweaks aren't enough Samsung. China phones are like AMD, can't touch the high end yet but bags of value for money at the lower end. The Xiaomi Mi 5 and Mi Max phones have ceramic bodies and the Mi Max has a design to almost rival the S8, but Xiaomi lost their way with the pricing.

What I think will happen this year, is that Apple will take the Samsung screen technology and design (yes they're using it for the iPhone 8 ) and do the design properly. I don't dislike IOS but it's not the OS for me, however it's unrivalled as a fully optimised mobile platform, the S8 doesn't even perform as fast as an iPhone 7, but it should be obvious why IOS is the better optimised platform.

I hope there's a surprise contender somewhere this year, no sign of it yet.

Had various Sony and Samsung's, never and won't get an IPhone just don't like the IOS or the company. My current phone is a Z3 it went faulty when I first got it, however this was dealt with by Vodafone had a loan phone untill it was fixed. I quite like to tinker with the settings on the camera so had no issues with pics and must say apart from the poor speakers the phone has been great.
I'm due an upgrade and have played with S8 and I doesn't feel premium. what did impress me though was Samsung's ability to over hype a product and their knowledge on how to make a launch so tacky - what a load of old **** that was. So unlike others I will reserve my judgment until the new Sony range is released and see what else is about.

Why don't you like the company? How are Samsung ok and Apple not ok? Not saying Apple are angels or anything but it bemuses me how people seem to see a moral divide between the two companies - at best they seem very similar to me.

Never liked the software, much prefer other platforms android or windows. As a company there is something about Apple I just cant put my finger on. Its all about choice my Bro and Sis love them. I prefer Ford to Vauxhall also :-)

So you don't like them because of no rational reason?

That's fair enough - each to their own and all that.

From what you say though, you've never owned an iPhone, so to say you don't like the software seems a bit dismissive if you've never attempted to run with it. Just looking at someone else using it doesn't tell the whole story. In using both Android and iOS extensively I have discovered that there are certain things I like on both platforms. I would never have discovered this had I refused to try Android, or iOS.

I guess you just don't like the idea of the software more than anything!

Enjoy your Vauxhall

I think you are being a bit presumptuous here. I never owned an iphone, however I used an iphone 5 for around 3 months between contracts, albeit this may not have been as extensively as your great self, but long enough to discover there was nothing to steer me away from the android platform as you can only choose one at a time.
I went for the S6, which was a great phone for me personally. However I’m sure you can Google all the pros and cons for me
I also find Apple’s marketing at tad aggressive on it mass globalization journey. Bit of a shame as Samsung on same route.
Thus Im holding out for the Sony before and will weigh it up then.
Without being to dismissive - I won’t be enjoying Vauxhall as I don’t like the driving position or the ergonomics although the vx220 isnt bad. I drive a Honda and a Eunos turbo for fun.

I hope that is rational enough for you

I wouldn't say it was presumptuous insofar as I only have the information to hand that you have provided - which was that you have 'never owned an iPhone, never will'. If you look back I wasn't actually having a go at you or being scornful and fanboyish, I was just attempting to interpret what you said. Whilst you might not have technically been the owner of an iPhone, I think 1/4 of a year spend with an iPhone is tantamount to ownership, and that knowledge would have been useful. Though if it was a recent hand-me-down to see you through to an upgrade then it doesn't represent the cutting edge, and it takes a good while (and some willingness) to learn the ins and outs of a completely different OS. As I said though, each to their own.

Samsung have always spent more on marketing than Apple so your point there is lost on me. You can even Google 'HTC' and 'iPhone 7 Plus keyboard' at the moment and you'll see they've bought Google Ad placement front and centre to advertise the S8.

Samsung spends billions on marketing their products so it's a bit baffling that you should happily buy Samsungs if this is the main problem you point to with Apple. Last year for example, Apple had the 33rd biggest advertising budget in the U.S., where Samsung were 13th.

We all have our dislikes though I guess!

To the OP - I'd go for the S8+ (or the S8) if it's that or a Sony for the reasons mentioned, though waiting is a good idea since any new phone is prone to teething troubles. I'm considering the normal S8 on my EE contract as I have 30% discount and am due a renewal, however I want to take a look at the LG G6 in the flesh first, and unfortunately LG don't seem to be pushing demo models out to stores.
