We're about to move into a new property that will give our toddler a playroom.
I'm planning to fix our old 42 inch plasma to the wall in there for him (as it's too big for our lounge and worth nothing much to sell) and I'm now contemplating what our options are for a cheap and cheerful sound system to play CDs, iPod (Bluetooth or wifi) and possibly an input for the TV... there is no massive budget for this as it's more that it just seems a shame not to do something. As he's so young I'd like it to be wall mounted ideally so he can't pull any speaker cables etc.

Anybody know of something low budget that would fit our requirements?

I hadn't really thought of an Xbox...
I was more thinking of something amp/speaker based so the TV wasn't on all of the time - our TV is already on a lot and I'd like to reduce the amount of 'screen' time... trying to encourage the music side of things without there being a screen on to transfix an impressionable mind!

If you are that concerned then don't put the 42" plasma in the bedroom and just get a music system.

It's not about any concerns... the TV will have it's use in there for films, CBeebies etc. What I was meaning was that I would rather 'music time' not involve the tv being on so that he isn't constantly bombarded by screens being on. More of a balance thing.
I like the idea of an Xbox for its versatility... we just don't want to be the parents that constantly have a telly on like we seem to be at the moment!

a dvd surround sound system/home cinema - i bought one off social media 7years ago for £20 still going strong. you should be able to get a decent one second hand for under £50.

I wouldn't worry about it as it's how this world is going. This generation of children will be used visual distractions and won't suffer from visual overload.

I don't think it's that unusual for a child's playroom (not bedroom) to have a means to watch tv and listen to music. The 42 inch plasma is currently surplus to requirements, hence we've decided to repurpose it...

Most Schools have this type of setup now so not unusual at all.
Does the TV have internet as it would be good to use as a wallboard for leaning activities also.
As for the stereo I would go for a cheap ipod docking station with built in radio.

Couple this with a chromecast audio. You / OH can control the playroom music remotely from your phone. Assuming you have a power supply and some old speakers you can use. LEPY LP-2020A Amplifier https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00C2P61FO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_SKUSybSJ5BACQ
