Spain Car Hire

Anyone had any recent experience of hiring a car from or near Malaga Airport?
Wondering if there were any issues or things to look out for.
Looking at trip advisor, there seems to be nothing but horror stories about hidden insurance add-ons and fuel scams.

Wondering if there is even one single honest car rental company there.

I recently went to Alicante and used enterprise. I paid in GBP and picked up with no issues at the airport. There was a queue for all the ones that seem cheaper but they are not. Enterprise will try and add on extra insurance but you can get third party cover from iCarhireinsurance.

The best thing is enterprise have a full full fuel policy. Most of the cheap ones charge you for fuel when you get the car, then refund what you have used, or, some charge you for what you have used plus a fee to re fill. This can be an extra 20 euros plus the fuel.

I paid £55 for 3 days in Spain. I received a 1.6 ibiza 5 door which was very good value I thought. I did around 200 kms and put in 10 euro as the car was full there was some "free" fuel :)

I would avoid the cheap ones that charge you 10 euro per day as in the long run you will pay. Also enterprise have a machine (piece of card) where they check scratches on the car, and any under a certain size they wont charge you for. Its a good tennis ball size.

Hope this helps

Cheers

If you use economycarhire.co.uk they have a UK call centre you can resolve any issues with. Their prices are also good as they include no excess cover, most others you have to leave €800 + as excess.

I have been using them for years with no issues

http://www.malagacar.com/ I use all the time good fuel policy (get full return full) and usually the cheapest.

OK guys, so what is your view on the fuel schemes?
I'll likely be hiring two small cars - would prefer one large people carrier but strangely all the quotes seem to be cheaper if you take 2 small cars and you get some change.

So, should I be going for full/full? is there any merit in the other schemes?
At least one of the cars will be driven extensively (trips as far as Seville and Gibraltar).

Full / Full in my opinion. Why pay an admin charge for someone else to fill it up for you?

At Faro they seem to be adopting the bring it back with the same amount as you take it with. Other than that the full full method is better as long as there is a filling station nearby and I am pretty sure there is at Malage as it is just outside the town

I've used these guys before too, very reasonable pricing and they do a free shuttle from the airport!

A number of people have told me to go via http://www.doyouspain.com/ - some kind of broker.
A Ford Focus sized car seems to be about £162 for 8 days hire on the full/full policy.
Sounds reasonable to me, but am just wary about whether the actual car hire places will honour those prices when I turn up at their office to collect the car or if they'll add some last minute hidden extra charges, knowing that I won't have a choice since I'll have pre-paid.

As I metioned before, watch the excess charges, they charge your credit card for the excess usually €800+ don't dont take it just check it's available. Any damage to the car and you will lose it.
