Hi

Im going to new york in April and have a dilemma with accommodation, and wondered if someone could help as i dont know manhatten very well
1) Do i stay in upper west side hotel for £230 for 5 nights or pay £427 in mid manhatten?
2) How long will it take to travel from upper manhatten to mid manhatten? (is it walkable, if not how long on metro)
3) Is it easy and safe to come back to upper west manhatten at night on the metro?
The hotel is situated on 258 West 97 Street, New York City, 10025, USA (upper west manhatten) so if anyone knows the area id be grateful for some feedback

4) Im assuming its still a set fee of $45 plus toll and tip from jfk to upper manhatten ?

thanks for all your help

Hi - long time since I was over there, but I don't think its far enough up to be concerned about. One thing to consider if you're concerned is that £200 is a fair number of cab rides!

I thought this question was posted a few days ago thurs/fri last week.

Stay in midtown, or around the bottom edge of the park.

Up around 100 on the West isn't quite so nice (Upper East to about 90th is quite posh however). Not murderville but I wouldnt stay there I dont think. £427 for 5 nights isn't too bad for mid-town. Which hotel is it in midtown?

Rex, I've already mentioned the hotel option I went for in a previous post in one of your threads.

However, I'd just thought I'd point out that being as you're going for 5 days, in case you didn't already know, New York does an Unlimited Metro/bus travel card for 7 days, which is what I plan to get when I get there soon. I think it costs $24 per person for the week and gives you unlimited local bus and Metro rides until midnight. 'Local' includes the metro up to JFK airport too. http://www.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm#7day

That will maybe help you decide...

I also think this page is useful (gives you a tip about getting onto the subway from JFK) http://www.ny.com/transportation/airports/JFK.html

Public transport in NY is very cheap, last time i was there (2 yrs ago) $1.25 per ride from anywhere to anywhere including to/from JFK (though there you pay $5.- for the monorail that links the underground to the airport).

Safetywise, NY is nowadays one of the safest big cities in the US so nothing to worry there.

Hi Rex. I went to New York last April and didn't go up that far on the Upper West. I know that you can buy a 7 day unlimited Metro-card for $24 (about £12).

I stayed at Hotel31, this is situated on 31st street and only took about 3-5mins to walk to Macy's, Empire State! I think for 5 nights it is around $690 INC TAXES. (hat is based on a shared bathroom which are spotlessly clean. There are 2 per floor but only about 5 room per floor that actually use them as the others are ensuite- I never had to wait once! It is a great htel for a great price and in a good location.

Whatever you choose, have a great time :)

Hi there, i have been to new york on numerous occasions and i stayed at the travel inn new york city the last time, and i felt this was a great location and cheap too especially as there were 4 girls sharing one room last time. It is close to the bus station, close to the underground and times square is practically on your doorstep. here is a link to the hotel, hope this helps http://www.thetravelinnhotel.com/
