Yes, there's always a Christmas ("winter") sale.

For this year, come back in three weeks: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-12-01-steam-winter-sale-start-date-confirmed:)

Check out Humble Store too.

Not only do they have regular Humble Bundles with proceeds going to charity, but they will also have a christmas sale in their store. I found last year a good number of titles were cheaper than Steam.

Use humble store or Cdkeys, or all key shop for steam keys at half steam prices, ;)

Yeah I'm gonna get me a £50 card I think and just look at the sales!

If you add games you like to your watch list , when they go on sale you get a notification so saves you hunting for deals

You can get better prices elsewhere as mentioned from CDkeys, Bundlestars, Humble Bundle etc.. and they will probably be cheaper than Steam (even when they have a sale).
Been using Steam for years but I hardly ever buy the games directly from them.
