Storage heater advice?

We have Dimplex storage heaters in our lounge and hall and we are pretty well stuck with them for the time being. I wanted to get radiator covers (the 'box' type with the shelf on top and a decorative grille on the front) but I was told that they are not suitable for storage heaters. Is this correct and has anyone else used them?
Failing that, I have looked at Dimplex shelves for above storage heaters and they are metal and very plain. I would rather have something which looks a bit nicer. Our lounge has dark oak/walnut colour furniture and finishings and the hall is paler shades of wood (pine/beech/pale oak colours). Could anyone recommend shelves which would be suitable?
Thank you!

Radiator covers reduce the effectiveness of the radiator by trapping the heat.

The reason for metal instead of wood is the direct heat that storage radiators produce during the "warming up" IMHO

That said you could build something or fix a normal shelf for the 8 months or so that the storage heaters are completely turned off

Sorry for late reply! Yes, I thought that but I wondered why they seem suitable for other radiators but not storage heaters?
