Been looking through various forums for a cheap, decent laptop for my daughter for university. I've looked at other threads but couldnt find anything relevant that was up to date. It'll be used primarily for coursework, email and internet and I know she wants Wifi if possible. There seem to be quite a few laptops around the £400 price including some Acers, Lenovo and Toshiba models but I found this ]NEC notebook for £349. Aside from the price it appeals to me because of the 3 year anti theft warranty. That could prove useful in a university environment.

I'm not sure whether to go for this one or wait for a Vista model to come down in price to a similar level. £400 is my maxium. Any advice would be much appreciated.

The link you have given takes you to a sign on screen ..so no details of the NEC

You'll not get much for £400..vista requires higher specs in terms of memory and graphics so I suggest you take a look in your local PCworld...find one you like that works with Vista , within your budget, then ask on here if you cannot find it cheaper elsewhere.

this is the nec link it refers to http://www.think4.com/notebooks_laptops/-price-price_under_699/

the 12" dell from the same link seems an ok buy for £400 ideal for uni & on the move + a 3yr warranty

or you could look at dell

if you havnt already looked here theres quite a few under the £400 mark

I have just recently bought this laptop from pcworld and can recommend it. My neice also has the same one and is really happy with it.

I had been searching for weeks really waiting for a good deal to come. I really wanted the larger ram tho and to get that you have to pay nearer the £400 mark than not. It has the upgrade to vista option if you decide to take it.
Regarding the insurance, try enquiring on your own house insurance. When my son went to uni at Cardiff we insured his laptop on our house insurance for a very small extra amount.

Hi

This laptop here:

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/119776/rb/24926696319

Represents very good value for £388 delivered. It also has a free Vista Premium upgrade voucher, although currently, you'd be better off running XP on it.
