This is exactly my dilemma.

how about the samsung i8910 omni hd (no keyboard but so much faster than the N97).

Depends what you want.

If you want applications galore with half decent phone and camera then iPhone hands down, if you want a phone with some extras then the Nokia.

i have an htc touch diamond

not suggesting you get one, though they are great little phones, but one thing that puts them above the ubiquitous iphone is the fact they do more than one thing at a time, so i can surf web, check emails, have a load of rss feeds going, watch a film, listne to podcasts, sms, mms, and even talk on the phone and just chop and change between open programs.

don't think the iphone can do this, not sure if n97 can

i had 1 for a day and sold it windows mobile is bobbins

That could your problem. The i8910 I talked about (new been out just over a month) is Symbian S60 r5 (the same as the N97 but with a far faster processor). Downside is that the orange firmware is rubbish but when replaced its as good as the n95 just far, far faster with a better camera.

I can only really compare the n97 with the i8910. My needs was gps and a camera so with the tomtom software not available that ruled out the 3gs.

The n97 has a strange keyboard which was hard to type on and the firmware I saw was buggy (an upgraded version was released last week). Camera is still 5mp and seemed worse than the n95 camera I had before. Between the keyboard and the camera it wasn't worth the upgrade.

The i8910 lost the keyboard, has a bigger screen and a better camera. The onscreen keyboard is good enough for the work I do and the screen is great.

If tomtom was available and the camera better the 3gs would be the better choice. I can see myself getting an iphone next time around but for the moment the gps and camera needs stopped me going for the apple.

The keyboard and buggy firmware stopped me going for the N97. The i8910 seemed so much faster (even more so once the poor orange firmware was removed).

You were never gonna choose any other way by asking a bunch of Apple fanboys for advice, I have the N97 and it is a brilliant phone.

what about the palm pre ? iphone killer ! Am thinking of getting one - anyone care to comment ?

well ive had loads of symbian phones and i curently own an iphone.

The iphone has its plus points: namley its slick as hell, and the app store is handy... tho there are... cheaper alternatives.

Im not a fan of the iphone though, much more keen on andriod OS, that will be my next phone.

Having said that, between symbian and iphone i would reluctantly choose the iphone.

I don't think anyone said it wasn't. But, it's clunky, the applications don't match up and as an all-rounder, the iPhone can't be beaten, it's tidy and syncs better with PCs and Macs than any Nokia phone will.

Yeah, I do acknowledge that Nokia releases to retailers before the software is ready to go. Usually it takes a few fw updates to get it right. But at the price that Apple asks for it's iPhone vs its spec, they can afford to put more into software development. Plus they have a head start anyway as Apple are all about software, Nokia are strictly hardware.

The iPhone 3Gs is a decent looking piece of kit, with a great User Interface, but beyond that it's strictly style over substance. It's still struggling to catch up with features that were considered standard 4 or 5 years ago. The N97 is pretty buggy but that will be fixed by firmware within the next few weeks.

Buggy or one that works out of the box with no issues? What features were standard five years ago that you're missing? Apple have a fully functional browser and sorted out contracts with unlimited data so there's email and internet wherever you are without having to worry about cost - most carriers were playing catch-up with that. It's not style over substance when the substance itself is substantial, heh.
