Any advice please for some shoes that'll be smart, comfy, sturdy and most importantly 'trendy'.

Many thanks.

Trendy isn't going to be smart and suitable school shoes.
Check the school guidelines and see how much leeway you have in terms of footwear.
Might to able to get away with black trendy trainers.

Converse and vans both do all black leather shoes that are allowed at most schools .

The trouble is that schools have these policies to prevent bullying, social discrimination and to allow kids to focus on getting to know each other rather than each other's clothes. If they allow kids to wear nice trainers just because they're black then IMO this kind of defeats the point, and they might as well let kids go to school in their normal garb.

I know you're looking for brands other than Clarks, but I've also got a 13 year old son and I've tried buying other high street brands but find they do not last as long as Clarks as the soles and heels wear through. My son wanted a trendier shoe that was slip on long and pointy, more of a dress shoe. Last year I saw some in Clarks (£42) but now no longer stocked but found some BNIB on eBay, lots of different sizes available starting from £8 plus postage.
Link here as example of shoe Hoxton Gent. They also did the same style with laces called Hoxton Chap.
