Train tickets from London to Eastbourne. Where to begin?!

I'm completely new to buying train tickets. On thursday I'll be taking a return trip to Eastbourne from Barnes (in London) around rush hour times. I don't know where to begin looking for tickets, as I know how expensive some journeys can be. I'm 15 and I'll be travelling alone.

Any help would be greatly appreciated and repped of course! :)

Have a look on Raileasy to book your tickets, you can also phone them (£1 day return for your age)

There is a train from Victoria if you get the tube from Richmond

Wise words from Choccy, direct train from Victoria to Eastbourne goes every 30 mins (0:17 and 0:47 past the hour). Journey time about 1 hour 26 mins.

If you're in Barnes are you close enough to the river to walk over to bridge to Hammersmith to get the tube to Victoria?
book train tickets from
but need to get to victoria to catch the train :)
I don't know where the £1 comes from, it's £11.75 return for anyone up to, and including, 15 years of age. It's more expensive to buy a ticket from London Victoria. Route is from Barnes (or Barnes Bridge) changing at Clapham Junction and the fare is an Anytime return so is good on any train.
And as it's an Anytime ticket you can just buy it on the day from the ticket office if you like.
General info here on buying train tickets but I found out that going directly to a train companys website such as for example rather than an independant rail ticket retailer such as is cheaper.

My b/friend and i tried various independant sites that were supposed to save you money and they were all basically the same price, but when we tried going direct it was 17 quid cheaper.
book your ticket in advance and its much cheaper!
with southern, you have to book before 6pm the day before to get advance tickets...
