Ultra Cheap HD DVD's??

Hello there

Just purchased the Xbox360 HD DVD player (Thread in main forum, £99 from Dixons) - and subsequently looking to amass a collection of DVD's to watch on it.

Any information on any specific HD DVD movie deal/offer would be greatly appreciated.

From experience, is it worthwhile trying out the likes of playasia and the american sites who ship over here?

Interesting and useful site, thanks for that!!

Thought there were a helluva lot more titles to chose from though, in general - a tad frustrating that most movies are still only coming out on std dvd format. Read that Universal are releasing around 100 this year - hopefully sooner rather than later!!!!!

try places like

and others are your best bet for films that are new and cheap, otherwise be prepared to pay 35% more for films which have been out a good amount of time. the american places are way better, films like Babel have been out 1 month in usa but no chance yet in the uk. same for films like chronicles of riddick, it has been out in usa for 3 or 4 months, it comes out in 2 weeks in uk and is £6 or more more expensive.

had noted and checked those sites - do you not get hit with various taxes and the like should the order value exceed a specific amount? Couple of figures I have seen banded around were about the £18 quid mark, and HD DVD's on that site, after conversion, could just creep over that threshold.

Then there's the age old region problem, although having read several comments on here it looks like the 360 player can read American formats...

£18 is the limit, most hd dvd are under the £18 limit ( it doesnt include post and package) so as long as the hd dvd itself is under £18 you are ok.

all hd dvd players are region free at the moment, including the xbox360 add on. i purchased some hd dvds from uk and i have to say that they are not worth the money. i paid substantially less for films from usa and until the price comes down on hd dvd's in the uk, i will only buy from usa. ( unless of course there is a misprice).

i got films like poseiden for £12, batman begins for £12, superman returns £15 all from usa yet paid £18.99 for van helsing from the uk, and at the time it was the cheapest it could be found for. i wanted a film to test my hd dvd player although i could have got the film for £11 from yank land.

Will give them a bash then. Quite fancy some of the new releases over there, with some luck the strenth of the pound will see them fall below the £18 mark!

So, not having seen or used a HD Player as yet, are they all they're cracked up to be, in your opinion!?!

aif you use composite it is automatically great, if using vga, dont forget to change your display settings. i got the vga cable as i wanted to see the upscaled normal dvd's but didnt change the display settings, i thought batman begins was rubbish, until i realised it was being displayed in 640 x 480.

i rewatched it in decent settings and it looked great.

some films dont look all that super duper and i will say that the xbox360 does get alot noisier than when it plays a normal dvd in the game tray ( mine is silent when normal films are in the game tray).

there is a list on a website of what films the members of the forum think are the best transfers, wothout getting all technical, it appears that a film will only ever be as good as the original print, so the older films may appear clearer than when there were released on normal dvd or vhs but dont go expecting them to be in 3d with digital 5.1 and thx if they were not originally like that.
