Hi,
I have a friend in the US and he told me Walmart is selling a couple of models of iPhones 5S for like $149 but they're locked to these US carriers that won't unlock them officially unless you're with them etc.

I remember reading in comments to deals about the iPhone on here that people were inserting a 3 sim as the first sim to basically get an unlocked iPhone.

My question is this: do iPhones really become locked the moment a sim is first inserted? Would this apply to a US iPhone too? Many thanks to anyone who can help and merry Xmas to everyone!

It depends on where you buy it. from cpw, argos and many suppliers it is. from apple and john lewis it isn't.

as for from the usa, who knows.

EBay does cheapest unlocking
Search example "iPhone 5c o2 unlock code"
Most unlocking shops use eBay and add their own charge on top. I remember unlocking a US phone for under a fiver 2 years back

There's no code to input for iPhones and already searched for unlock from Straight Talk on eBay but can't see anything.
It's a shame but guess it's not meant to be

Just make sure they're not hardware locked (ie the SIM isn't integral to the phone. had this before with a moto g I bought, and quickly returned).

What us network is it on? I understand there is no unlock code but thats how i search for any phones including iphones. Been doing it for last 7yrs. You buy the unlock and before paying send message to seller station phone type, network and imei. They send request to network carrier who authorise the unlock the seller will email you to add the sim on different network and plug into itunes. Takes 3 to 10 days. If you dot find on ebay.co.uk look on ebay.com

Straight Talk or Total Wireless which are all part of Tracfone.
Nothing on eBay US either. Yes, I'm familiar with how it works with buying unlock codes etc on eBay.
Thanks for the reply. US phones are tricky to unlock.

Not all US networks. It may just be the one that your phones with. Some network providers are arsy. Like EE here wont let you sell your own phone for 6 months after taking out contract. Heres Verizon link for example.
