Hi Peeps - I am looking to buy an American Style fridge freezer and really need some help to find a great price and reliable appliance!!! About a year ago, we bought an LG from Comet which broke down only 5 months later. Comet were an absolute nightmare and I will never shop with them again (had to threaten them with the Small Claims court before we were given our money back - after waiting 10 weeks for it to be fixed)

I'm looking at the Hotpoint MSZ802DF or MSZ803DF but will also be keen to get feedback on other models......or any other than you can recommend. Ideally, I'd like to steer clear of LG (due to the last one breaking down!) and don't fancy Samsung cos of the bad reports Watchdog had on them. I really don't want to spend more than £750.....but I'd rather spend much, much less!!! It must have a water/ice dispenser and I'm looking for it in stainless steel or silver.

Rep added for those who can come up with good suggestions/cheap deals!

PS - the best price I've had so far for the Hotpoints mentioned above was about £750 after discount with http://www.wepromiseto.co.uk

Really hope you can help........I've been living with a little, tiny fridge with a freezer section that won't even fit three cornettos in for months now and it's getting me down!!!!

the only watchdog report i heard of is with the RS21 models from samsung. my parents bought an a samsung RS21 about 4 years ago, this one comes without the ice dispencer. seems to be running fine food is still nice and cold, it does get noisy sometimes. Maybe we got lucky. So AFAIk the other samsung models are fine. I never heard of anyone with an LG fridge before so i cant comment on that. Hotpoint also has a bad repuation. sry not much help here.

edit:
this samsung one looks good

we had similar problem with comet we bought a samsung american in sept started playing up in nov, fridge was not keeping things cold after a month and two engineers later i had enough demanded money back again i would not shop with these again to much hasle. i bought the whirlpool american fridge freezer out of currys for some reason they were selling this for £649.00 it was a black one elsewhere this fridge freezer was selling over £900.00. i was looking for a whirlpool because after talking to the engineers they said it was the only american fridge freezer that they hardly get calls out to

we looked everywhere to get a good deal but we only found this one and i think we was lucky good luck in your search

currys deals can be great. depends on the size of fridge freezer you need really . i researched for months for my large family and decided to go for a matching pair of seperate fridge and freezer which looks great and the storage superb. if they break down at least you are only replacing one. Everyone comments how good an idea it was.

the new water dispenser models need plumbed in which is trouble and expense, they always seem to break down. our local dealer told me they were a nightmare, as all the dispensers quite flimsy. he wouldnt even recommend one to me. more for look than service, was his words. all my friends have removed theirs and wont have them back. one who needed the ice bought a seperate ice machine so that should give you a clue how bad they are.

I am a designer so i see lots of houses so just passing on the experiences i have been told.

i wish you lots of luck.

thanks Computerman, but I'm after the one with a water and ice dispenser. That's the problem I've come across with the price comparison sites - they pretend they've found you a brilliant deal, only when you go to the site, it turns out to be a completely different model!!
#11
thanks 128plant - yeah getting the thing plumbed in was a nuisance and a big expense. We've already had that done when we bought the first one, so at least we don't have the expense this time! Good idea you had with buying two, but I really am after the usa-style. We've done a lot of work to the kitchen so that the frigde freezer will fit in exactly where I want it.....so no changing things now!

water and ice dispencer reduces the freezer compartment space.

and thanks to you, hutchir9, but again this is another one of ukprices quoting for a completely different model. A clever marketing ploy on their part, but it drives me MAD!!! lol thanks for looking though, very much appreciated

i had a chest freezer before i bought my american freezer and i was amazed how much fitted in to the usa freezer
for me i would not go back to the normal fridges or freezers we love having filtered water on tap plus kids love the ice maker

usa style swallow the space. have just done an experiment with friends and mine outdid capacity by miles. certainly if living in hot climbs most of year its different but in this country the filtered water is hardly essential. not all filters do what they claim, nor is your water supply perhaps good enough to drink it even filtered. remember all the scares in recent years.

i am glad you make full use of yours i wouldnt. sorry op, good luck. perhaps cheap and cheerful may be the best advice as they all seem to die relatively quickly.

i've had an american samsung jobbie for about 6 years and it's never had any problems. Just change the water cartridge every 6-12 months and your sorted. Would never go back to a normal fridge/freezer.

Its really good knowing you've always got copious amounts of ice for when friends come round, especially now most people like ice in their cider !!

Did you find a decent deal as i want to change mine, it works perfectly, just fancy a black or stainless one to match the new kitchen !!!

Try 365electrical. They also have a shop in Leicester, Marks Electrical, which do some good deals.
