I have no idea about brands or anything when it comes to hubs.

Poundland ones are USB 1.1 not high-speed USB 2.0.
I'd get a USB 2.0 as some new USB products will not work with 1.1.

Get a powered one.

Such as?

Has anyone got an actual link to one that is known to be good?

Hard drives are very near to the limit of the power USB provides so I'm not surprised one didn't work on an unpowered hub.

With hubs you just need to make sure it's USB 2 (if it doesn't say it probably isn't) and has an AC power adaptor - past that just pick one you like.
