E2160 @ 3Ghz
P5KE Wifi
3Gb DDR2
Corsair HX620
Vista/XP/UBuntu

used for gaming, currently on a 15" 4:3 but hopefully a 22" widescreen
around christmas :)

I'm probably looking at a 3850 512mb/9800GT/9600GT, but are there any deals about?

Thanks for both :)

Would you guys consider a 4850 @ £120 with dual slot cooler or a 9800GT for £85 (if it comes back on today only @ scan) better VFM?

The 4850 performs slightly better, but for 2/3 of the price... Also, what is the general consensus on the faulty G92 cards? (I know the main ones are the mobile G84s, but still?)

A proper dual-slot cooler that exhausts out the back or one of the CPU-cooler-bolted-onto-graphics-card jobs?

The 'faulty G92 cards' is just an inquirer rumour as far as I know, I've not seen any coverage of it on my usual hardware sites.

I would say the 4850 was better VFM if you're just after performance but it's a fairly close thing as nvidia cards do currently have some tempting extra features (HybridPower and PhysX for example).

Thanks for the info about the G92s - Charlie there isn't the most bias free reporter :D

What about a £65 9600GT? (again scan today only) Should do fine in everything but cryisis, and I'd have £60 left over

Well that particular 4850 does have the advantage of being about 1.5" shorter than normal so it'll fit in some cases a normal 4850 (or 9600GT) won't.

A 9600GT for £65 is a decent choice, as is a 3850 if you can get one for near £50.

Novatech are doing a 9600GT for £67 delivered though so the scan deal isn't a particulaly hot one if you do want more time to think.

Also form novatech, a 8800GT 1Gb for £77 - not sure it's worth a tenner more than a 9600GHT, and 1gb makes no difference...

8800GTs 256mb popping up again for £50 :)
