You need to also get a licence for the VHF, so that you can legally use it.

I had this problem last year, had to get one for my fathers new sail boat. Everyone will try and sell you an Icom because thats what most dealers and chandlers stock but their expensive. Not having much experience of this and after a lot of research on yachting forums on the net, the advice I recieved was to get a hand held radio that floats and not one thats fixed in the cabin as if you go that way you may need to get extra equipment depending on the boat. They're an expensive item for what they are but what your paying for is an insurance policy if anything goes wrong! We settled on the Standard Horizon HX750E which is waterproof, floats has a distress beacon and comes highly regarded in yachting circles. I think you can get it for £128 at the moment from cheapest place I've found which is Seamark Nunn. Link below and reviews online. Good luck!
