Virgin deal advice required

Just spoke to Virgin about installing a new line upstairs. Tried to wangle to get installation for free but they would not budge. But they will throw in the HD box for free(not the recordable one) with a additional £5 a month for the extra box.

anyone know any ideas how I can get them to install it for free? £35 they are charging for me to install a brand new line in the bedroom as I didn't fancy dragging wires all the way upstairs round the house from the box in the front living room.

in total, this is what ive decided to go for:

24/7 phone package
basic tv
and basic broadband,10 meg
extra HD box

all for £35 a month.

i get the feeling im not getting enough though for that price...........

anyone suggest any good bundles for that price.

again, thanks for looking

If you're already with sky bt or any other provider virgin and ask about this again and if they say they can't budge then just say you will stick with sky or bt etc.

It really depends on who you get , if you be polite neough the person may give it to you for free.

if you want anything else you'll have to get your phoneline changed back to BT
you're on a better package than I am at the same price!

what would an outside contractor charge to run a cable split from the main one round the outside of the building and into the room you want it in?
find out and phone virgin back again.

Slackratt, you really think ive got a good deal??

What type of package you on if you don't mind me asking?

The only issue with a split line from the main one is that you can't watch two seperate programmes at the same time as both the boxes would still be connected to one line.

the advantage of a new line is that we can watch two separate programmes at the same time.

maybe I have got a good deal and I dont realise it.....LOL

I'm sorry to be blunt here but you dont seem to have grasped the concept of the single incomming line and how it works.
Of course you can get 2 different pictures from one incoming line , they just fit an inline splitter !
I have a 4 way splitter and a 2 way splitter and I can watch and record different channels in every room I have a box in

you can't have a cable box without paying for it.

and yes rooney I have grasped what splitting an incoming single line signal does.
if you want cable multiroom you pay for it from virgin on a monthly basis.
you legally cannot buy a virgin cable box and the dodgy flashed ones won't work due to nagra III encryption.

unlike Sky, the boxes from Virgin are rented.
if they offer you a self install it'll be cos theres already a cable point on the wall or its a direct replacement for an existing box.
they do not allow you to self install with you own splitters and cable.
therefore a manned install will cost you £35.00
the boxes and the smart cards are paired together and can only be used with each other.

So the OP would be unable to get a new box/card from virgin and fit it unless it was a replacement for their existing one and if so, virgin would collect the unused one.

to get multiroom, unless they are prepared to wave the install fee, you need to cough up.

as for my own package
its large TV, 10mb broadband and weekend calls only. and we pay £37 odd. we have 1 HD box which we paid £50 for (not the V+ recordable box) and they waved the install fee as a it was a direct swap for the standard non HD box.

Are you and En1gma the same person ? My reply was quoting En1gma's comments , not yours. I trust this was just an oversight on your part ;)
Oh and by the way it depends upon which area you are in whether or not the dodgy boxes still work - in our area they are working just fine thanks ;) ... how long it will continue to work for however is an unknown. I guess when they get round to changing over to nagra 3 encryption in our area that will be that.
