as far as i know GNER doesnt exist anymore, it changed franchise with someone, think its east midlands, or national express, so you may not get the deals they were once doing might be wrong tho

That's right, GNER no longer operate the east coast main line, it is national express. I would also check nearer the date (within 3-months of travel) using any number of train searches - google them!

Hi steven1001, don't know if his helps: I always use thetrainline.com, they only let you book up to 3 months but using what you've said I picked a wednesday from sheffield to Edinburgh waverley and friday for return ( I used 27/02 and 29/02 and it shows £16 single per person =£32 each or £106 each for first class. Should be the same when you want to travel just book as soon as the site lets you (end january/start feb).
Hope this makes since:)

I would recommend using www.nationalrail.co.uk, as they will list the prices for all of the different tickets available. However, they only hold details of journeys 12 weeks in advance, so you may have to wait a while to look.

I just checked fares for random dates in January, and it quoted me £58 being the cheapest fare available (standard class) for 2 adults. However, this was buying advance tickets. It's quoting over £200 for first class travel, and to be honest, I'd rather travel with the rabble than give any more money to the train companies!

The direct routes seem to all be with a train company called 'CrossCountry', whoever they are (www.crosscountrytrains.co.uk) - they seem to have timetables up until May 2008.

Hope this helps. The rail network in this country is so confusing!
