Virgin router won't work as just a wireless access point.

Also you may have to return it if you recently left them

Check what mode it's in
192.168.000.1 in Router mode
192.168.100.1 in Modem mode.

A LONG time ago VM would supply stand-alone routers that was a basic router with a WAN port. You could get them because of the issues that the early SuperHubs/Hubs suffered from, perhaps he has one of those?

If it is a Superhub... TalkTalk does have some service issues, but a new router will not help much. If you only want the SuperHub to act as a Wireless AP then connect a computer to one of the SuperHubs Ethernet ports, Go to 192.168.100.1 and make sure DHCP is disabled under Advanced/DHCP/DHCP Settings. You may need to go to the Superhub settings before connecting it to the TalkTalk router. I have not kept up with VM Firmware changes, so cant guarantee what your wanting to do will work.

You need it in Router Mode, You need DHCP Disabled.
And to access the SuperHub you need to make sure that the TalkTalk router is NOT set to use 192.168.100.1 as its IP, But you can set the TT device to 192.168.100.2 and have the dhcp server only give out IP's in the 3-254 section so it is easier in the future to log into the VMSH. If you do not make that change you can only enter the SuperHub via a direct connection (Wired or Wireless) to the Superhub.
