Hi All!

Bought a new desktop prior to Vista coming out...

I didn't know this but Acer no longer supply restore disks and so you have to make your own - which I didn't do!

Anyhow, due to my (silly) error, I have corrupted Windows XP and now have no (legal) copy of XP to reinstall back onto my desktop. Am umming and aahhing about getting an OS back on my system.

I think I'll chance Vista, but don't need a retail version - just an OEM version to install on.

Cheapest I've seen is around £80 with P&P - anyone know the cheapest?

Just get 'any' copy of XP Home/Pro/Media (whatever you were running) and install it with your legal licence key. Doesnt matter what copy you use to install as long as you use your legal product key which should on your computers chassis somewhere.

Otherwise, best place for vista is probably ebuyer...

I'm confused reference the x32 bit and the x64 bit versions? Anyone offer some assistance??
#3
im confused about oems
can we just buy them and install as normal?
i thought its only valid with pc bought at store... I build my own pcs so can I use oems?

32bit version is meant for 32bit (normal) processors
64bit version is for the newer 64bit processors (but my 64bit processor runs happily on 32bit XP, so i guess the same should be for 64bit processor on 32bit vista)

oem's are meant for dedicated system builders, and you need to buy some piece of hardware at the same time, like a mouse or something.

You wont get much if any support from microsoft, and if you change the motherboard (or possibly other components) you will invalidate your copy of vista and you'll have to ring microsoft to get it re-activated (you could say your mobo blew up and you had to buy a new one). Currently the policy is to allow these reactivations, but that could change anytime, you never know

but, you do save a bundle of cash by buying oem

Thats a handy bit of info, think you might save me a good £70 there. I busted up my Windows weeks ago and have been running Linux ever since

i have a acer pc,i have the free upgrade aswell.Just trying to sort everything out now,how do i find the certificate of authencity,it also says S/N whats this. When you order the free upgrade how do you tell them you want the 64bit version,or do they send both versions to you.I have the acer t180,3800+ 64 bit computer,if anyones heard of that it has MEDIA CENTER 2005 on it.

Does anyone know where i can send it of to,or does anyone know if it can be done online.

Ok, here we go Skippy:
firstly got to http://www.acer.co.uk/acereuro/page6...crc=1737753709
Have a read of that page and then click on the website link down the bottom:
http://upgradeweb.moduslink.com/vista/Acer
Fill in the online form. Read all the terms and conditions thoroughly. Make sure the secure padlock is in place before you enter your C/C details.
This should all be self explanatory but if you have a problem you can contact them direct on UK: 00800 666 44 666.
You can also email them on MSTUPVISTAEMEA@moduslink.com
They are VERY slow in getting back to you via email.
One thing to watch out for is that they ask you to send proof of purchase to them via post , fax or scan. I sent them a scan of the receipt via email but they haven't confirmed that this is acceptable yet.

Hope that helps.

ps. When I posted this their website appears to be down for maintenance so I can't be absolutely sure I got all the above in the right order.

copied this from another thread..and no you cannot get 64 bit only 32 bit...if you want 64 you'll have to purchase yourself

try running the free belarc adviser
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
from there you can get the processor model, then you can find out if its a 64 or 32 bit processor.

If you have a 64 bit processor you can run either 32 bit or 64 bit, for now I'd probably stick with 32, 64 bit is more secure but there are still a clot of compatability issues with programs and drivers on 64 bit systems
#17
anyone know where i send the receipt lol
#18
send a scanned copy to the email mate otherwise to the address in the netherlands
#19
thanks mate

so i managed to send them the scanned receipt to the email address, all i need to do now pay for it.When i was on the website sorting the upgrade out,i was at the part where i had to pay for it,it wouldnt accept visa debit cards so i chose wire transfer instead;i was planning on going to the bank and paying it from there. So i saved it to my favourites so i wouldnt loose the information on where i have to pay it to.Anyway i looked on my favourites today and when i clicked the link it just took straight to the original page from the start. So i havent a clue where and how to pay,and whether iv lost any info i need. What should i do? lol
