HI
I'm in Sheffield for work and looking to get my VW Golf (5yr old) Serviced.

I have a quote from the local VW garage (gilders), but wondering if anyone knows of any good but cheaper garages.

£153 Service
£21 Pollen filter
£299 Cam belt (if needed)
£50 Brake Fluid (if needed)
£45 Key recode (has lost it's remote functionality)
£49.95 Investigation for broken bonnet release £80+VAT if the fix takes an hour.

A central garage or one that will run me back to the centre for work would be preferable

Cheers

Buy a new battery for the remote and program it yourself
battery cost probably around £1

Any small garage will be WAY cheaper than a main dealer, pop into any you pass and ask
for example pollen filter for a Vectra is only £6 yet the main dealer wanted almost £40

If you can do it yourself go to a motor factors and buy the parts will save you around 80% of the price youve been quoted on servicing.

Program Golf remote

Remote Control Programming (1997 ON)

Procedure
1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.

2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second
key.

3. Using the remote control press the Unlock button once, and the horn
will sound once.

4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate the coding
procedure. The remote control will now be programmed.

NOTE : When performing programming on additional remotes the procedure
is the same, except you press the unlock button 2, 3 or 4 times for the
different remote.

For example : If programming 2 remotes press the unlock button twice with
a 1 second interval between each press, repeat for 3 and 4 remotes.

5. Switch Ignition OFF.

6. Remove key from ignition and check for operation.

7. The coding procedure can be repeated up to 4 times for additional remotes.

8. The ignition must be switched OFF between programming each remote
control.

Remote Control Erasing (1997 ON)

Procedure
1. Switch Ignition ON and leave the key in the ignition.

2. Mechanically lock the vehicle using the Drivers door using a second
key.

3. Press the remote control unlock button 5 times in 1 second intervals.
A short horn will sound.

4. Wait 6 seconds and press the unlock button once to activate memory
erase.

5. Switch ignition OFF, all remotes are now erased.

Toyota? I've no idea, the above was for a Golf like you siad you have.

Google program "insert car make and model and year here" keyfob and it should tell you if you can program it yourself or need to go somewhere and have it done on a machine.
If it has to be done on a machine If you have a key already go to a locksmiths that can cut and program car keys and you'll save around 50% of the price a main dealer would charge you.

There are some keys that can only be done by reprogramming the car ecu but even then some locksmiths have a reader that can do it.

I've been taking my Audi to B&S tyres at Sheepbridge for past few years - they seem honest & cheap.

Will need to book car in though

I live in Sheffield and have a VW - my trusted mechanic is out near York now (used to be on Valley Road) - Windmill Garage, the guys name is Kirk but I stopped going because of the distance but I am always tempted to. I'll find number if you so wish.

However, Meersbrook Garage which is at the end of Rushdale Road has just had a refit and they did my MOT pretty cheap. I did ask them to check my ignition coil though as I thought it was playing up and they said it was fine. But a little later I'm having the same problem again, but its not something that would fail the MOT.

Although the people who frequent this place are the angriest people in the world - www.sheffieldforum.co.uk is a good place to find a recommended garage for our area.
