WANT TO PURCHASE AND/OR ADVICE PLEASE - USB Hub and a USB/parellel printer cable/adaptor

Hi all.

I have an old (bought 2002) Compaq Presario 2100 laptop which although on it's last legs is still working fine (albeit vvvvveeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyy slowly).

The only snag is it only has one USB port and I would like to get hold of a USB hub to make one USB port into four ports. Is this right? If so, where is the cheapest place to buy these please?

It seems you can get different speeds (1.0/2.0?) and some run off mains whilst other run off the power of the laptop. Since my machine is so old does the speed/power really matter?

Secondly I would like to get hold of a parallel to USB printer cable to connect an old HP Laserjet 1100 printer to a USB port. The cable I currently have says 1284-1994 on it and the connector to the computer end has 25 pins and is around 3 or 4 cm wide. Can you buy adaptors to go on the end of this cable to allow them to fit a USB port?

Or alternatively can you buy a new cable with a USB connector on one end and the correct connector for the HP LaserJet 1100 printer at the other?

As you can tell from this post I know very little about computers. Sorry to trouble you and thank you for any advice received.

You can get a USB hub from loads of places.

Here are the ones that Maplins do for example

USB does not need to run off the mains as the power is supplied via the USB connection.

There is a "new" faster USB and yours is likely to be the older slower one, but it should still work OK, just a little slower thats all.
Here is a USB to printer cable.

Rather expensive but you may be able to hunt round and get it cheaper elsewhere.

Try going to a computer fair that they hold all over the country, you can usually get inexpensive cables there.

If you want to know more about computer fairs let me know.

I got one of those that you can plug in an adapter and have 4 ports.
