WANTED: Cheap 60 Hz compatible TV

traf Avatar

I bought my son the Xbox 360 for Xmas, but it appears his TV doesn't support 60Hz and as a result, some of his games are in black and white.

Therefore I need something for him to play his games on, as cheap as possible really and no smaller than 19 or 20 inch screen I suppose.

Any help out there, either from private sale or a link to a retailer?

Argos have this nice tele new for £90 and is ntsc compatible(i.e 60hz)

Might be worth asking around friends if someones throwing out a tv,people are always upgrading and you might get it for free.I got 2 tvs from different people this way:thumbsup:

traf,

that's odd as ALL UK TV's will only be either 50Hz or 100Hz if double scan (Some will be NTSC compatible but the standard output is 50Hz). Is your 360 a UK model? If so then maybe there is an issue with the scart socket on your TV or the scart cable, or is it possible that you can change the settings of the input via the TV's menus or maybe the settings on the Xbox 360? I remember when I first got my Tosh 28" 100Hz and the picture was dreadful on AV 1. I found that I could set it for NTSC or PAL or Auto and it would decide itself. May be worth checking this before you pay for a new TV.

I think there's some confusion here, so here goes.

The Xbox is standard UK issue: it's from Argos!
His Tv is about 2 yrs old, also from Argos, it's a 50 Hz Hitachi.

The 50 hz games play fine, the 60 Hz ones are in black and white after changing the Xbox profile to PAL 60.

Thus I need a 60 Hz compatible TV to play all the games on: yes or no?

in the olden days of rgb, many ps2 owners could not get colour on the usa games, this is because they didnt use an rgb scart lead.

in the new days of hd tv, some 360 games ( top spin 2 being the most famous) refuses to work on any tv not 60hz compatible although you can try something here ( read 2.7)

viva pinata is another game which is 60hz only.

here is some reading for your enjoyment.

If you know the exact model of the tv(check back of it for model no) please post it up here or do a google on it,you can usually find out the specs from that.Being only 2yr old and hitachi and not a no name brand you would reckon it would be ntsc compatible.
When i bought my 24" bush tv from argos last yr i made sure it had rgb and ntsc support.I`ve tried various ways of trying to reproduce your black and white picture but it always displays in colour. If i drop down refresh rate to 50hz then gears of war won`t even start.
Follow brums instructions for setting pal 60,make sure scart is firmly in or try another scart lead or try svhs if tele has that input.
See how you get on.

It's a Hitachi C2143S, if that helps.

Check the post further down on this link,a guy says he uses it especially for gaming and it does support pal 60 and thus should see games in colour.

Go into menu on tv and see if there is a pal/ntsc setting and change it if u can while 360 is on and displaying in black and white. If no luck then turn off and unplug 360 cable at both ends, connect again, try in av1 first then av2 on tele.
The 360 will turn off if video cable is unplugged so you will need to switch off/boot up each time.
You can also take off scart adaptor on end of connecting lead and plug the red/white/yellow cables into svhs connection on tele either at the side or front of tv to possibly rule out faulty scart adaptor/lead.
I`d presumed in your first post that you`d already tried all this and a spare lead and that tele was old as you definately should see games in colour.
Good luck, this should save you buying a new tele:thumbsup:

OK, thanks. Now I can't find the remote control for the telly to access the set-up menus, so I'll send away for a replacement.

Might be worth trying without remote first anyway,i`ve never had to set pal/ntsc on any of mine or anyones tv before.Only needed it really for switching between av1/av2/svhs.
If you need a remote one of those cheap all in ones compatibles from asda are good, cost about £8.

Traf,

If you have an old pc monitor you could use that for the xbox, all you have to get is the vga cable which you can pick up for abot £10 and a female 2 female connector. I`m going to do the same thing as ive just got a xbox 360. Even if u dont have a monitor u could probably pick one up locally on ebay for penny`s as people want the tft monitors now.
