Hi there, not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes.

I am looking for advice on a cheap, but good quality media player.

It has to be able to play - Multiregion DVDs, DIVX and would be great if it had a USB slot. Also recording is a nice to have as is upscaling, but not essential.

I am looking to spend circa £50 and will only buy from a reputable store.

I have seen the Toshiba SD290 which is a dvd player and plays divx, but doesnt say if it is multiregional.

I know I am asking for much, but hey, its the credit crunch, and if anyone should know it will be someone on here.

I appreciate your help :-)

I have a Phillips DVP5980 - it plays DIVx, it upscales, it has a USB, it's multiregional, and I think it can be had for around £40-££50, I know that Richer Sounds had some for £35, if you can grab one at this price you'll be getting a real bargain. Everything I've thrown at it plays perfectly and the upscaling is superl

Perhaps I have just been lucky - had mine over a year - paid around £75 and it's the best player I've ever bought - and I've been through a few!!! Touch wood - so far NO problems at all with me - I'd recommend it, based on my experience

Hi there, I a similar list of requests very recently and my list to look at came down to (best price I found at the time listed after)...

LG DVX392H - £45
toshiba SD580 - £50
Philips 5990 - £63
Onkyo DV-SP406 - £70
Pioneer DV410 VK - £70

I ended up going to Tottenham court road in London where I found the Philips and Pioneer players a little cheaper. I ended up with the pioneer for £55. Obviously that's location specific, but may help you.

Maplins does their own version meeting your specs and within your price range (£30-40), but it's a no-name player, so I avoided (I've had 2 of those, each last just over the warranty then stop working...)

The only other tip that might be worth a look see is this:-

Basically Argos were upgrading anyone who bought a 3980 to a 5990 all for £50!

Hope this helps
