Everyone needs to be aware of their consumer rights, whether they buy on-line, over the phone, at the doorstep or simply in a retail outlet. There can be extra consumer protection if bought by credit card. First port of call, as usual, is always the Citizens Advice Bureau. Call them or vist and maybe take a look around their website www.adviceguide.org.uk.
Specifically for consumer issues they have a helpline on 03454 04 05 06.

Minimum 12 months if brand new.

Some have 2 years, so check with manufacturer. If it hasn't been a year and you're the original owner, contact the retailer first as they're usually quicker to deal with problems and might send you out a replacement instead of waiting for a repair.

This happened on my phone. I returned it under warranty. Was told the connection had come away but was not covered by warranty as this was wear and tear! got nowhere with them after many phone calls

A USB port breaking is in no way wear and tear. You should have stood your ground.
