Washer Wash-out

OK, so the door on my Hoover has cluncked out and I'm in the market for a new washing machine.

What am I looking for:

Large load - 7kg and up
Good make - I don't want something that's just going to keel over in 2 years. I thought that the Hoover I bought would be a long-term buy but I found out that it's basically a Candy once I started having problems. I understand that AEG, Electrolux, Meile, Zanussi, Tri City Bendix and Bosch make good machines but I'm happy to listen to your suggestions.
Inside my budget - I don't want to go over £500 delivered.

I like functions, but they aren't a deal breaker; but I'd really like to be able to independently control wash temperature and a wide aperture would be nice (again, not required).

So, what do you recommend? Any deals you are aware of?

Your help is appreciated.

Just bought a hotpoint xmas eve, last one finally gave up after 8 years (hotpoint also).
Good thing is all spares are easy to get, they are simple to work on (e.g. motor brushes, door catches, you know the simple wearing parts), all come with 5 years parts warranty at no additional cost (remember to register).
The fast 1400 spin is a plus, we noticed a difference from the 1200 we previously had.
Currys have this one:-
http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0385799629.1167084846@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccchaddjkdeijelcflgceggdhhmdfin.0&page=Product&fm=5&sm=0&tm=0&sku=487719&category_oid=-30549

It may be available cheaper with the discount codes, but i couldn't get the BWP****** one to discount at all, i did get free delivery and 5% off
You may do better.
This is just IMHO, i'm not discounting other brands been good also, but Miele etc. seem pricey.
After all they are only washing clothes, the simpler they are the less there is to go wrong.

Hope this helps

Managed £279.99 with free delivery, i'm sure there was a 5%teaching code on here the other day. Will have to look harder.
In which case you should be able to get this for half your budget, alternatively you could take out a cover plan for 5 years, that way you would have no labour costs should the worst happen. With the remainder of your budget.
I always shy away from these as the machines are simple enough anyway.

Also try
http://www.the-ols.co.uk/OLSLogonServlet?formAction=Welcome&retailer=OUTLET

Its the Indesit, Creda, Hotpoint Outlet store, prices include delivery.
Prices are very good, but bear in mind they may be end of range.
As far as i'm aware they all come with full guaratee's
Only found this site upon registering my own washing Machine.

I would recommend a Bosch. They come with a full parts and labour 2 year warranty. They're very sturdy well built and reliable too.

Should be able to get a good one for less than your budget.

Bought this 7.5 Kg load LG washing machine http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/store/dix_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1592273910.1167133447@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccddaddjkedfdggcflgceggdhhmdfho.0&page=Product&sku=558377&fm=10&sm=0&tm=0&tabIndex=2 for £427.45 in July. It doesn't have a drive belt so its so quiet you wouldn't even know it was on. Even on the spin cycle :-D :-D

Now on sale at £299 (minus 2.5% quidco and any other dixons codes - don't know if XMAS 0620 is still working or not for £20 off). Excellent machine and price.

Nice :santa: That's the direct drive washer then sparky29? I've often wondered if they're any better than belt driven. Sounds good anyway :santa: Thanks :)
#7
Yes it is direct drive. I Thought after buying it it was worth the extra money for the peace. Gutted it has come down in price so much. It was recommended by an assistant in Comet who knew he wasn't getting a sale. Said it was a top make on a par with Bosch and nearly as good as Miele. Strongly recommended at less than £300 especially if you have an open plan property.

Sounds like a winner - thanks for the help!

Do you still reccomend this washing machine?
Any pros/cons you can tell me about?
Is the 1200 spin enough in your opinion?
Thanks a lot, my washing machine (cheapo Servis) doesnt seem to be washing very well and makes some horrible rattly noises, had it about 3 years now.

OR can anybody reccomend any other models to me - around £300 (max), and silver, the rest of the specs as asked for in the original post!

Cheers

Excellent machine. So quiet you don't even know its on the spin cycle. Only know its finished when you hear a cuckoo clock going off! The clothes come out really dry after the spin cycle. Sometimes too dry which can mean more ironing.

Its also intelligent. Initially on start up its slowly rotates the drum, weighs the load and calculates how much water to add and cycle time (displayed digitally as a countdown)

For less than £299 its a bargain

Was it a 2 year warrenty with this one?
Im just a little worried about servicing if anything goes wrong as the direct drive seems quite a new thing?
Dixons / Currys out of stock at the moment in my area anyway.
Cheers

keenly priced at comet click here and yes it has a two year warranty:)

Yes, just seen that thanks, free delivery too.
Anybody got any views on if servicing/repairs outside the warranty would be expensive or difficult compared to a belt driven machine?

I used to work in electrical retailing and my personal opinion is that reliability can be the luck of the draw.
for example,my first washer, when i got married and had no money was the cheapest i could get.It lasted 10 years, even in an outhouse with a leaking roof before it gave up.My next washer, same make ,uneconomical to repair after 2 years.

I bought a zanussi fridge freezer,a good make, uneconomical to repair after 3 years, but was covered with a 5 year warranty(bought extra)so got some money towards a new one.The hotpoint i replaced it with is stilll fine 7 years later.

i suppose it depends on what,if anything, goes wrong.with washers it tends to be brushes and belts that need replacing more often than not,so with the LG,you remove this problem.Motors and control panels etc are expensive to replace on any machine.

i think that by giving a two year warranty,Lg are confident in the machines reliability.you could consider an extended warranty for peace of mind. They may seem expensive and I know that stores get a bad rep for pushing them, but it is the customers choice at the end of the day.you have to decide whether the price is worth it for peace of mind,is it better to have and not need,or to need and not have.

I think I read somewhere (possibly on MSE) that you are better off buying a kind of insurance policy to cover one or more appliance(s) than expensive in-store extended warranties.

However, the staff get commision on these policies so may negotiate a discount if you take out the policy. I have in the past on a washing machine (my previous one). You then get a period of time (one or two weeks - I'm not sure) to cancel the policy and get a full refund and keep your additional negotiated discount. Obviously you can't negotiate if you are shopping on line so this may not apply. Worth a try as any discount is better off in your pocket than theirs.

I'm looking for a tumble drier and just come across this about coverplans http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=60969&highlight=currys

I know not the exact washing was review on which, but similar LG direct drive machine were.

Which reports state the main con of the LG was the amount of noise it produced??

Is the LG really as quiet as you claim it to be then?
#19
Awesomely quiet.

If you live in an open plan house/ studio or have a kitchen diner it is ideal.

If you have got a laundry room/ garage etc there is no advantage over others - it washes clothes like any other.

Don't you mean the main PRO not CON?
#21
Still don't know whether to go for this or a silimar priced Bosch......... comparing them, dont think there is much difference at all!

No .. Which report stated that:

Pros: Very low running costs, Electronic display, Good spin cycle
Cons: Noisy, Poor rinsing

?? Hence why I am quering why everyone has said it was quiet? I am just trying to decide myself which washing machine to go for.

I am interested in this LG and a Seimens.

But looking here I found these reports which don't seem very good:

http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=126

http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.php?name=Reviews&rop=showcontent&id=49

But they don't say the exact model number etc. So who knows!

When in Currys I tried lifting the two Bosch and LG. The Bosch is quite a bit heavier. Which in my books is better.

Also the LG is quite a lot deeper 630cm than a standard washing machine which might be useful to know.
#24
The LG is 600mm deep according to LG website?!
Im sure its not 630 cm - 6.3 metres deep?!

I have looked at the Which reviews and you are right - it does say noise levels are poor but that is not for this exact model so not sure what to think really!

i have an LG washing machine, cant remember the model number and too lazy to go down and look

i bought mine december 2002 and its still going strong, i have 3 children so its on most days of the week

mine has a 1600 spin which is fab for reducing drying time
the time save button cuts down the wash time with no ill effects
you can customise every program to suit you, you can adjust temperature, spin speed, quick, normal, fast rinse
the amount you can cram in the drum is amazing compared to a standard sized washer

i cant think of any problems i've had with it in 4 years

hope this helps :)
#26
Thanks for that!
Is yours direct drive?
banned#27
yes its a direct drive and is quieter than the machine i had previously

Talking about Bosh and warranties - do you know that Siemens offering 5 years warranty on the following models:
WXL147AGB, WXL167AGB, WXL127AGB, WXL147AUK, WXL167AUK, WM14S493GB, WM16S493GB, WM14S794GB, WM16S794GB, WM12E44SGB

The offer is valid until 31st of January, so hurry :)

Siemens and Bosch (in appliances) are trademarks of the same group - BSH and their white goods are pretty much the same.

Sorry meant 630mm!

It is because it has a curved front - so I measured it at its widest point.
#30
Which Siemens one were you looking at? Is there any in the price range of this LG? (£300)
banned#31
i 'think' siemens start at around £500-ish
#32
Yes, they are quite expensive :(

But the OP stated inside my budget - I don't want to go over £500 delivered.?

Another way to get free 1 year warranty (starts after manufacturer's warranty expires) is to buy machine on some credit cards, such as BMIBaby one. This way, any appliance you buy will be covered with additional 1 year warranty, which is not bad.
