forgive me if i have this wrong - but the portable is self powered via the usb - so if you want to move around a lot that makes more sense.
personally i have the 5tb seagate expansion drive and it works amazing on the xbox one - also have one for all our normal pc & mac stuff - years of video & pictures along with documents.
5Tb might seem like a lot but my laptop i only bought in july has 2tb - its almost full - thats why i got the 5 tb to transfer the info over.
But between multiple dropbox/googledrive/onedrive etc online storage possibilities - especially when with some mobiles you get 2tb (i have 2 samsung accounts like that) it can be over kill buying but if you have family stuff you never want to lose - i know i have enough copies in different places not to worry lol..

Best is very difficult to qualify. People will have good and bad experiences with both brands. All you'll end up with is anacdotal comments that won't really give you much in the way of unbiased imperical data to go on. Maybe Google reliability for both brands/models? Then decide if you truly need 5TB or not. Also, the feature set is different on each, so that again comes down to your personal usage and what's beneficial to your own needs.

Thanks for your comment & portability is indeed important, so the WD Passport does seems to be winning, at the mo :)
