My teenage son, 17, is a bit on the skinny side and wants to increase his body mass. Can anyone recommend a good weight gain powder/shake, also he is has a barbell and dumbbells in his bedroom and wants to increase the weight of the cast iron discs can anyone recommend a good/cheap supplier of them too?

He shouldn't need gainer or protein shakes, it's a lot cheaper to eat lots of food instead - pasta, rice, potatoes, etc. with your meat and veggies of course! At 17 he'll grow like a weed if he eats enough food!


Protein shakes and weight gainers are supplemental to your diet, so if your diet supplies enough calories/protein then they serve no purpose other than to put a hole in your wallet - it gets expensive!


If he/you really want to go the shake route I recommend using any of these websites and NOT buying anything from health shops/supermarkets etc as they are insanely overpriced - it's all the same stuff.

I think it would be a good idea to get a gym membership instead of buying some extra weights if he enjoys lifting.

GNC / Holland & Barrett - reputable companies so you know you are not buying stuff filled with sawdust, etc....

He doesn't live with me but when he stays over its always a battle to get him to eat his dinner as like most kids he's social media/playstation mad which pi$$es me off big time. He wants to take the easy route and have a drink which is packed with calories. He has started going to the college gym and using weights at home but the ones he has are really only dumbbell size which is pointless on a barbell. He wants heavier weights so he does fewer reps.

I've told him to make his own calorie packed drinks in a blender but he is adamant weight gaining powders are the best way.

Reputable companies that sell "diet pills", yes, of course.. Don't spout off nonsense you have no clue about.

I'd be hesitant on dropping money on weight gainers if he can't be chewed (pun lol) to eat a basic meal. Tell him to try out GOMAD (Gallon/4 Litres of milk a day) for a few weeks on top of his usual food intake.

Tell him to take up a sport rather then just pull weights. In terms of health it's much better. Unhealthy weight lifting is going to be a big killer in this country the way some kids are going at it. I would recommend his find a boxing club to hand about it, just do the training.

Tell him to get on YouTube. Millions of people giving out advice on gym stuff. But yes to bulk you must eat ALOT and work out Alot

Get him a chin up bar as they are amazing for core and upper body strength.

if he wants to gain waight he needs to eat. however he will only become fat (not ean muscle). to gain muscle he needs to get off his xbox and go to the gym several times a week... and still eat well/healthy

even if he uses lighter weights provided he will train till exhaustion he will benefit the same way as using max weight/x number of reps.

there is no easy way. give him 50quid for a session at a qualified sports dietitian and see what he/she says (same as myself and few others here)

Op, I get all my protein powders etc from bodybuilding warehouse, always good service, great products, don't go Holland and Barratt! Crap products! Been training for 20 years I know the bad ones, good luck
