Just shove it in a cupboard or bolt them to a wall. Are you thinking of running PoE ?

I am thinking of a 6U cabinet but what sort of depth? I see some at 400mm and others at 300mm would the 100mm make much difference? was thinking of shoving a power adapter inside along with the router and a nas drive loose hence my 6u choice

This will sound daft but why don't you get some old cardboard and make up a mock cabinet to get an idea how much room you need and if it will fit where you want it. Wont take too long and will save you the hassle of trying to mod a cabinet later.

You don't need a cab fella. What are you going to put together that necessitates one? There are situations that a cab in a home is not needed unless its located in an area which caters for it. Think heat generation for example, rack fans are not built to run silent.

Why do you need a patch panel? Why not just terminate the cables with plugs and then straight into a switch? I have 20 cables going into my switch, each cable numbered and plug terminated.

Standard rack mount cab are 19" wide however you can now get 10" wide ones but your switch will dictate the size you need. In both width and depth. You mentioned 6u so a normal patch panel would be 2u and standard rack mount switch would be 2u so I doubt you would get power supply and nas drive in a 6u

Standard 24 port switches and patch panels are 1u.

The depth of the cabinet depends entirely of the depth of the switch you're going to be putting in it. Don't forget to leave at least 50mm extra at the back for the power connector, and 50mm at the front for the fly leads. CPC used to do a black abs plastic 6u cab which was nice and light but I think they discontinued it. Try Bownet.
