A VPN is typically a paid service that keeps your web browsing secure and private over public Wi-Fi hotspots. VPNs can also get past regional restrictions for video- and music-streaming sites and help you evade government censorship restrictions.

The best way to think of a VPN is as a secure tunnel between your PC and destinations you visit on the internet. Your PC connects to a VPN server, which can be located in the United States or a foreign country like the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, or Thailand. Your web traffic then passes back and forth through that server. The end result: As far as most websites are concerned, you’re browsing from that server’s geographical location, not your computer’s location.

I recommend Private Internet Access as a paid VPN. I have been using it for a year without any problems. It's easy to install and it works with multiple devices.

Couple of freebie options: Opera windows browser has an unlimited VPN (although more of a proxy); Android has OperaVPN app. Other options are available...

Many of the free ones offer slow speeds, I travel a bit with work and they are hopeless for streaming, even for security had plenty of issues needing to reinstall. Been using private internet access for 2 years, excellent speeds and always works.

If you are using them for things you shouldn't then you want one that doesn't keep logs.

Strictly speaking VPN is a technology to create a private connection between two networks over the internet. It's used for workers to connect to their business's network while on the move for example.

The services offering anonymity are using VPN technology, they're not the definition of VPN even if they're often called that as shorthand.

Maybe it's time to start paying the people making the content you watch?

VPN provides secure connection through the Internet between the user and the define network zone, which is generally recognized as safe. What is more, the data transmission is ciphered by protocols offered by the chosen VPN provider. In such a manner, VPN secures your net connection from tracking and snooping, but it’s absolutely useless if you download infected files. Therefore, you need to install other tools protecting from malware.
It's important to select a VPN provider, which enjoys confidence of all its customers. But I’d like also to focus you on such features as the number of servers and their locations, the speed connection, the type of encryption, the users’ feedback.
P.S. I also recommend reading this article https://www.bestvpnrating.com/beginner-guide-internet-privacy to stay informed. Hope you’ll find it useful.

Yep, there are after you! You've annoyed them and they have vowed to get you, and once they get you they will then focus on the multitude of uploaders, the millions of others that have these boxes, the thousands of sellers of the boxes, the mass of people that advertise on Facebook, hundreds of 3rd party add-on sites, the torrent sites that have been around for years and the people that steal the original content at source.

But before all that, they are coming for you!
