Check Task Manager to see if there is some rogue application running in there.

Windows can be slightly temperamental on shutdown :whistling: usually if it hangs and you end up turning it off at the mains it will then shutdown as usual in the future.

Have you installed anything new or made any changes to anything as there could be a problem with a program not closing properly? Unusual for there to be an issue wish shutdown, usually start-up that causes problems!

How long did you wait before pulling the plug?Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the computer to shut down.
#8
Mine also does that occasionally, try holding down the power button for about 5 seconds

hi, i will get my dad to check in task mangr , he left it on shutting down for over an hour ! lol he was quite miffed by it , so its not a power supply problem to the pc causing this ?
he turned it off from mains and then rebooted and it was still the same .
are there any other checks he can make to identify the problem?

But what about all those other startup items you've disabled - yes this may solve the problem but create others for the user. I'm sure if he starts it in safe mode too it'll work but thats not a complete solution. If disabling all resolves the problem I would suggest he ticks them back to start one by one to see which program it is that causing the prob and then go from there.

Dont think disabling all startup items counts as problem solved - although PC world have recommended my mum completely rebuild her PC from restore disc for some pretty straight forward probs before now . . .

great - I was just pointing out that if the user follows your steps it could have other implications. Quoting you work relates to fixing PC's may well make an inexperienced user follow them blindly - I was just trying to ensure they got the full the picture.

Your post came across as a bit - 'do this and it will all be fixed'. Where as it was more of a try this solution . . .

Didnt mean to shoot you down - bit of a swipe at PC world but not you ;-)

The system restore was probably responsable for removing the internet connection - it just rolls back you config and registry so if restore was before internet was configured it will be gone - all the files associated will still be there just not 'installed' if you like. I'll be very suprised if SP2 solves it but I like suprises !!
