Yep the police are right

Highway Code: every driver has a right to park anywhere on a public highway except those places which are expressly forbidden.

As long as you can open your front door, which i would guess opens inwards, they can park there if there are no parking restrictions.

Have you checked the title deeds? There may be some land that belongs to the house along the front that you are unaware of?
If so, you could put a couple of large stoneware pot plants to deter folk..?

Just get a muddy shoe and put footprints over the top of the car.

Put a sign up saying 'intimate massage parlour'.

No one will park there then.

I don't think I've ever seen a house open straight onto a road seems bizarre. sounds like if you had young kids and needed to use a pushchair you wouldn't be able to get out our if you were a wheelchair user.

maybe soak to the council and see if they'll put down white or yellow lines in front of the entrance.

is yours the only house or is there more on the road with the same problem? If so the residents could get together and sign a letter asking the council to deal with the matter as it's surely a health and safety issue regarding emergency services.

I would imagine a lot of old cottages open up to the road, you see them all the time in the Yorkshire Dales when roads were previously muddy tracks!

I don't wish to question the answers already given because they appear correct, but there is a specialist Parking and Driving law forum I have used for a couple of things. They really do have some experts on there on both Public road and private parking issues. Look for a user called "hcandersen" in the council section or post it in the "Flame Pit" section.

You haven't been around much then. I have seen these all over the country. I wouldn't want to live in one myself as it feels everyone is walking past your window all the time.
