What's the best free remote access sw for PC?

My mate keeps screwing up his pc and then I have to make a 40 miles round trip to sort it (and I'm getting hacked off doing it!).

Is there an easy to install program that'll give me remote access to his pc? I've tried the version that ms supply with w7 but it keeps finding reasons why it won't work!

We're both running w7 and it needs to be very simple to install as he has the tech savvy of a dung beetle...

Thanks guys.

Teamviewer http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx

I use it all the time across the globe and locally

Setup a fixed "secure" password on his teamviewer and add his id/password to your teamviewer - don't need to set it to run at startup - just tell him to open teamviewer when you need it

I'll even offer to give you a try with my pc if you need it (pm me)

Many thanks. That looks ideal.

I'll send him the link ( and an idiots guide on how to install it!).

Try to download version 8 rather than the latest one. I find it is much easier to use.

I haven't noticed any issues / changes with latest version

There's no repair ship in the little village where he lives. All he'll do is order a new pc and then I'll have to go over there and move his files over!

Thanks for the info, but it turns out he can't even manage to download and install the teamviewer file on his own! So I'm still going have to go over there! No wonder I have no hair left :)

Oh dear, not being rude, but does he actually need a PC if he can't install a program? My little cousin managed to install it with my instructions over Skype (or you could phone them). Things you do for friends ey :p I do always ask myself the question though, would they do the same for you!

Unfortunately, yes, he needs a PC. He's an author, so pretty much a required tool these days.

He's just the most untechy person you'll ever meet.

You just know already though that when he screws up the pc he is probably going to screw up the remote software too lol

Team Viewer. Or a VNC Server/Client.

Yeah, very true! He's already manage do 'something' that lost all sound? I have no idea what, the drivers are fine, but not even the test tones play?
I ordered him a usb sound card and told him to just plug it in and switch the lead from the motherboard card to the usb, but he's says he still has no sound! I'm losing the will to live ;)
