I'm sure I read on this site that you can opt out of the smart meters and that they're not as reliable or something. The comment was made by a gas engineer who installs them if I'm correct. maybe read through some of the older smart meter threads.

I did try searching first but the search engine on this site is a bit naff to say the least...

I had a smart electricity meter fitted. The installation was carried out by Siemens. I think you will end up with the same hardware regardless of your current electricity provider.

siemens are a very reputable company, I've never heard of whoever npower are using. can I ask which supplier sub contracted Siemens to do the installation for you?

Smart meters are only getting forced on the public because Lord Truscott (IIRC) was being bunged £2k a day by a company who made the meters as a 'consultant'. He's the one who added a line to the Energy Bill to say they should be installed.

These things are never done for your benefit, in future they might decide to limit how many units you're allowed to use a day then cut you off, or cut you off if they've made a mistake on your bill, but you're hitting a brick wall getting it resolved.

They won't even need to send someone out to pull your main fuse in future, some snot nosed kid on commission can simply hit a button on their computer, and off you go.

I work with a smart metering business, I d very carefully ask npower if their smart meter can be taken over by other suppliers or whether it's up to the universal standards. Because the standards weren't set in time for the start of rollout in 2015, some suppliers created their own versions which unfortunately are supplier specific so if you have one of these and move suppliers they either revert back to dumb meters or get ripped out and replaced by your new company.

You may care to read this in full:-
Your energy supply > Getting a smart meter installed

one extract though from the above link
You don’t have to accept a smart meter if you don’t want one. If your supplier tells you that you must have one installed, contact the Citizens Advice consumer helpline.

Agree with comments that you do not have to have a smart meter installed. However, we have (E.on) and it does make you think twice about your energy usage. The display unit is multi-functional and it can be set to bleep when it hits a daily ££ level. We set it at £4.00 which it has exceeded a few times, generally when the kids are living in the shower!! oO

Do you live in London by any chance?

I filled out the online form for SSE but I haven't heard back anything. So I rang up customer service and was told that they won't be able to help, as the process is done online.

My question is: Does SSE provide smart meters in London yet?

I had one fitted 2 yrs ago by BG, I dont bother looking at the monitor no more. A complete waste of time they are. And i still get the meter reader calling to check what i have used. And the monitor uses your electric and not theirs to work.
