Get her to buy a local payg one and use Skype/whatsapp/facetime on wifi. Some voip such as skype can call phones so if you use skype to call her mobile number it will prob be cheaper than using a uk phone to call a foreign mobile.

Poing to work for a whole year? Sounds uncomfortable. oO Get her the 321 sim from three, stick 20 pounds on it, calls are cheap from Europe, well for the next two years lol.

If you make many international calls around the world, a Skype monthly subscription may work out good to use in combination with Three.

Just a heads up on the feel at home on three.

When discussing with a staff member they advised that the sim would stop being active if it wasn't used in Blighty once every two months.

So if you think you could have it for a year away you'd need to either come back regular or send it home to be activated and used at least every two months.

This is just on what I was told so might be right or wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case.

Tesco mobile allow you to use your allowance abroad, I took a Tesco mobile sim to france and not had any nasty surprises yet, although it was only 3 weeks ago.

Make her buy it herself, she's clearly an adult and should be responsible for herself by now.

After 3 years at uni she in enough debt without burdening her with more. The phone is more for mine and her mothers benefit so we have peace of mind that she can contact home whenever she needs to.

Uni debt isn't like real debt is it though! 3 years at uni should be enough experience to be able to sort her own sim card. I'm not being intentionally rude, I just feel people need to stand on their own feet!

Uni debt is a real debt that nobody should have to get into. It now incurs interest of around 3% not just tuition fees there's the living costs she added to it.
Anyway thanks for responding.
