what size of tv?

Hello, we are buying a new TV as our old one has done 20 years continuous service but now needs to be retired.
I have read all the recent postings on tvs so am well armed with info for when we go to buy. However I need some help on lcd size as they all look enormous to me in the shops.
Our old tv is about 24" diagnally across screen and the set is about 27 inches wide. That sits just fine in a corner of our average sized lounge which is about 18x11. My OH would go for biggest tv he could get through the door so I need to get my act together before we hit the high street. Like most women I don't want a tv that dominates the lounge so I wondered about 27" lcd but there seem to be more 32" around so wondered if thats more what people go for? I am not even giving a passing thought to anything bigger than that! All opinions gratefully received!

32" is probably the most popular size but it really depends on your viewing distance, size of your room and where you're putting the tv in the room. Take into account that with flat screens you have the option of mounting on the wall......

The best thing to do is get a large piece of cardboard, cut it to the size of screen you are thinking of getting and put it in place....

Just got a 37" (to replace 28" CRT) but it just seems too big so I'm going to change it for a 32"....

11 feet isnt particularly very wide for a lounge , although 18 feet is a decent length , i presume that your tv is roughly 8-9 feet away from you , if this is the case then either a 32" or a 37" would probably best suit your needs. we have a 40" tv in the conservatory and we are 10.5 feet away from the tv and that is just right apparantly , it doesnt take over the room by any stretch of the imagination although it is a focal point of the room .... most new plasma/lcds's become focal points along with a feature fireplace. I would suggest that you go for the 37" tbh as this would be by no means obtrusive. It may seem rather large at first but you will get used to it , believe me.......(i tell all the girls that , lol !!) .... anyway good luck with your new purchase ;)

Whatever size you choose get a decent make - AVforums has some excellent info on best bang for buck in most categories (inc 32").
Size is not everything, and I'd take a decent 26" over a cheap 37" anyday. It is so easy to get used to the bigger TVs too - My 42" looked massive when I bought it 14 months ago, but now I'd certainly consider going even bigger.

Sony, Samsung, Panasonic & LG usually pretty reliable. Hanspree not bad on a budget - best to check each model individually though as some can be outstanding & some will be atrocious!
